This man is an unsung hero of 70s rock. Such a beautiful voice and liquid style. He deserved to be recognized more as the exceptional singer that he was and is. He had an effortless, clear voice that was very much reminiscent of his influence, Roy Orbison. It all just goes to show that if you choose your heroes carefully, you can be positively influenced by their work and produce truly great work of your own.

I'm just glad this one actually has an ending, instead of slowly fading out like all the other versions of this song. The quality also isn't that good, which you can expect from 70s/80s. It also appeared to be windy, which affected the sound quality.

My God, this man had the voice of an angel…I would die a thousand times to have that vocal sweetness. Alas…I was blessed with a barrel-chest and a foghorn. Sad shame that anyone that sings this beautifully should have to deal with an inferior stage sound like this. My favorite Souther tune of all is "New Kid In Town." His influence can be felt, as well as heard, in many Eagles hits. I dare say he may have been the unsung hero of the band. "Best of My Love," "Doolin-Dalton," "New Kid In Town," "Victim Of Love," "How Long," to name a few. Make sure to read "Heaven & Hell" by Don Felder to get the lowdown on just how important JD was to The Eagles huge success.

You may have a foghorn, but you write well. My mother heard this in the grocery store and it stopped her in her tracks. She said she doesn't remember it. When it came out she was working and taking care of two kids. She didn't take any time for herself and I guess she missed some good music. Makes me sad to think about. I hope she listens to all the music she wants now.

When this song came out I thought J.D. Souther was copying the feel and sort of even the title of Roy Orbison's Only the Lonely. Then I watched A Black and White Night and learned J.D. is a huge admirer of Roy. This song was a tribute to Roy. Then I learned J.D. had written and co-written a ton of songs that were hits for others. Soft-spoken Southern gentleman who won't carry tales about musicians and others he knew back in the wild '70s. Cute too.

With an idiot for a sound engineer. man, how you shined. I love watching the boys in your pickup band smile at you, acknowledging greatness, leading up to that magnificent second octave ending . Great song. Great singer. Have you ever noticed that the bass player in many bands has the coolest job of all? I've been a drummer all my 40 plus years in the business and I've often marveled at how cool a bass player is. He or she just stands there swaying to the music knowing the without him or her there is no song. The bass player IS the foundation to any and every song in my estimation.
