I have this set, but I am far away from home and I needed some of Haydn's sublime comfort. Thank you for posting this!

The baryton was a very strange instrument which a can hardly be built again or even transcribed nowadays. Its tessiture was more or less close to that of the cello, but it had so-called 'sympathetic" additional strings which resonated when excited by the other strings ( a well known classical physical phenomenon). In addition, the tessiture of the instruments set was very low: no treble instrument (e?g? flute or violin), because Prinz Estherhazy played the baritone, and covering him by a treble voice was out of purpose. No way to transcribe these works nowadays? We can of course replace the baritone by a cello, but we lose the resonance effect.. We can understand that Haydn was more than reluctant to write such strange trois, but Prinz Esrterhazy, usually so friendly with Haydn, insisted him in a rather harsh way to write such trios, so he wrote some 100 of them. It would indeed be a pity not to play these strange works, which are not "resurrected" ❤❤❤

It's a shame that Prince Nicholas got Haydn to occupy his time writing so many of these works with this odd sounding instrument. That was time that could have been spent writing great symphonies, quartets, concertos masses etc.

Haydn enriched the world with 106 Symphonies, 68 Quartets, two dozen concertos, and wouldn't have been able to write these if he hadn't written the Baryton (including concertos) works to please his patron's amusement and enjoyment of this instrument. As to odd sounding instruments, Haydn composed 5 concertos for the Lira Organizzata (a combination instrument of the Hurdy Gurdy and the positive organ) for the, King of Naples, of which two of the movements from two different concertos were adapted as Symphony movements. The concertos for Baryton were written for the Count's Baryton player, who would have been unemployed (possibly along with Haydn), wouldn't have improved the instrument, and Charles Burney wouldn't have written about his virtuosity. And frankly isn't Haydn's oeuvre sufficient large enough as it stands?

@@Renshen1957 I suppose. From what I've heard in this piece, these probably weren't that difficult for Haydn to crank out when it came time for his employment reviews, or when he accidentally pissed off Esterhazy. The sheer number of these bizarre ensemble pieces is what probably robbed him of AT LEAST several symphonies had he otherwise written, but I don't think it would add up to 126 complete symphonies in total. And it's super pretty!! Definitely helps shed more light on the "Baroque affect" that Haydn has always had for me... he probably enjoyed it at least a little bit.

@@roycezaro1998 Speaking of the Baroque effect, Haydn owned a manuscript copy of the Well Tempered Clavier. Possibly through Baron van Swieten who was besides a patron to Haydn, was also the patron of C P E Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven.

Same with Paul McCartney writing all those silly pop songs when he could have been doing some serious composing of oratorios, cantatas, concertos and so on.
