You got a good point there in questioning why a gang of goons would ever help a crime fighter by getting themselves averted in their kidnapping scheme. I totally think that Jameson, as far as his “truth deliverance” goes, is a loud-mouthed narcissist who believes the only person in New York who is truly a hero is him. I even think it’s always been about him. He could’ve just keep bringing news to the public about what’s really truly happening in a world where heroes who use their abilties to defend the innocent and villains who use theirs for personal gain. But he lets his jealousy, his obsession with ruining Spider-Man, and his yellow journalistic instincts get the better of him. You don’t need nor have to wear a cape to be a hero, it’s the good deeds in whatever part you play that counts.

@@nawafxgames746 That could’ve made a valid point on Jameson's part. But that’s not the kind person Peter Parker will ever be. If he did pay the thugs to help him (Spider-Man) in that staged kidnapping scheme, that would’ve given Jameson a huge reason to paint him as a con-artist if the thugs sold him out in a police interrogation. From what I remember from reading the original comics, Peter began working for the Daily Bugle to help Aunt May pay the bills and then provide for himself and her financially. And don’t get me wrong, while it’s unethical to take pictures of himself as Spider-Man to earn payments, he at least does this for very good and unselfish reasons.

So I got into comics by buying a Spiderman Encyclopedia at the Scholastic Bookfair in 4th grade, and the JJ backstory I got is one that is never really touched on in favor of being a joke that picks on Spider-Man. Basically, in JJ's early days as a reporter, he followed a costumed vigilante who would stop bank robberies and kidnappings. Eventually, his skills lead him down tracking a criminal that met with the costumed vigilante, where he learned it was all staged so that the vigilante could get fame on top of the illegal cash. This lead to an immense distrust in vigilante's, and usually insisting they have ulterior motives.

JJJ actually doesn't make a good point when he says that. If Spider-Man woke up one day and decided today's the day he's going to arrest Fisk, then that one would be one thing; but he didn't. The police finally got a warrant for Fisk's arrest, and Spider-Man initially was just there to serve as support, right up until Fisk's men started rolling out rocket launchers. Fisk was already being arrested by the police. Spider-Man didn't have any say in that, he just insured that Fisk couldn't escape while the police were dealing with Fisk's private army.

I don't really agree with that reasoning. Firstly, technically, JJJ doesn't have any in-universe way of knowing things would get bad because Fisk isn't around. We the audience know it need up being a bad thing because of comic book rules but in-universe, there's no justified reason why someone wouldn't want Fisk arrested. Like, imagine a hypothetical scenario where some random joe said "we shouldn't make this Cancer Saving Drug because it could allow a serial killer to not die early and thus go onto kill more people". Nobody would listen to that person because everyone would agree that a cancer saving drug is very important and there's no way of predicting whether what he says will even come true. Even if later, somehow, a random Serial Killer with cancer is cured and goes onto kill people, that original random joe still isn't magically a prophet. And if we were to treat him as such, then we would never ever make any medications ever because a serial killer could always survive. To bring this point back to JJJ, if we accept that JJJ is right that it was wrong to arrest Fisk because it would cause a bigger problem, then why arrest any villain then? Why not let Rhino rampage through the streets because "if we take him down, it might cause other villains to show up". Why arrest Screwball? "If we take her down, more imitators would rise". Instead of actually solving any problems, it just assumes the status quo is always good because it could get worse. Secondly, JJJ doesn't have any issue with the police taking down criminals. If the police managed to take down Fisk without Spider-Man's help, then is it wrong for the police to do that? If you say yes, then Spider-Man should have been out there helping Fisk escape and doing more crime. If you say no. Then Spider-Man isn't wrong for helping the Police with what they should be doing anyway.
@CeliriaRose
Жыл бұрын
@@FraserSouris it actually would be reasonable to expect that arresting Fisk could backfire. On one hand as JJJ points out Fisk is a controlling figure among the criminal underworld. Remove that controlling figure and it’s not much of a leap in logic to realize that the people and groups that were kept in line are no longer going to be kept in line and will start doing whatever they want now that there’s nobody stopping them. Second there’s the relatively classic concept that when you remove someone holding a main position others will move in to take their place. It’s often used in relation to gangs where the police will arrest key figures and new people will just move into their place. Even in some cases taking down an entire group just opens the door for other groups to form or move in and take over in their stead. So he does have a solid reasoning behind knowing what would likely happen in Fisk’s absence. It doesn’t stop his reasoning from being flawed since you can’t really justify letting a criminal off just because others will do the same or commit crimes afterwards but he is at the very least justified in his logic of the ongoing issues and continued cycle that would come from taking down Fisk.
@anthonycabrera8030

One good point JJJ makes against Spider-Man in the comics is that he can't be properly identified because of his costume. At one point a Spider-Man look alike started robbing banks and for a while police didn't know how to respond to Spiderman showing up because they could never identify if he's the real spiderman and with so many conflicting hearsay on his character their standard response was arrest or shoot on sight, making his appearance during already hectic crime or emergency situations even more manic.

There were actually several moments where Jameson made sense to me in game. Like in that mission where you have to groundpound the street. JJJ critizes it for damaging the street. and considering he couldn't have possibly known Spiderman did it for a reason, he did have a point about unnecessary destruction. Or at another time, in the mission with the water towers. JJJ sees Spidey messing with the valves, sees the water towers almost exploding and then sees Spidey try to fill the holes with his webs. I really get why he would come to the conclusion that Spiderman messed with the water towers to pretend to save them later. Remember: JJJ doesn't have the information we as players have. So while a lot of his points are misguided, a lot of them are also logically sound.

Note: I'm far too lazy to read a ton of comments to see if someone already said this but.... Its funny how he says "What if he staged them for his own glory?" Not sure it was intended but that was actually a plot from the comics with a group called Damage Control. (They were the people who canceled Vultures crew in the first Tom Holland Spiderman movie). The Damage Control crew in the comics began to manipulate and set up crimes so that the superheroes would destroy stuff in the ensuing battle. Which not only secured them a job, but also HUGE government grants to continue to clean up superhero messes. "[Creating] crimes for their own [profit]" essentially. Idk. Maybe I'm just reading into this too deep. But if it was an intentional reference, bravo.

@FraserSouris
Жыл бұрын
I mean, there are reasons one could argue why Rhino wasn't in the ultra secure cell yet. It's not like we know exactly how the Raft is operating. Firstly, the ultra secure cell may not have been constructed yet or wasn't suitable for Rhino or even inhumane at first. Imagine if the cell was, I don't know, some really painful and agonizing series of electric shocks. You could argue that putting Rhino into that was inhumane or that Rhino doesn't deserve that or that it was designed for people smaller than Rhino so a bigger version for Rhino is being built and tested first. Or Secondly, it's the same Cell and the Raft is just saying it's more secure as a PR Move. The issue wasn't the cell itself but whatever caused Rhino to be able to break out. So to blame the cell is kinda reductive. It's like if in Batman Arkham Asylum, someone complained why x villain wasn't put into maximum isolation. The problem isn't Maximum Isolation, it's that the Asylum is run by Strange.

For once, I think they BOTH make pretty good points. Yes, JJJ makes a good point, and some people would even have the motivation to do so if they had his powers. But the lady he was talking to also has a good point that that'd be even more effort than actually saving people. You'd need to be a pretty specific kind of person to see scamming people in that specific way as worth it. And that's only talking about this particular case, let alone all the other crimes he stops on a regular basis that he'd have to take the time to arrange. It'd be the one thing to commit to that would actually be *more work* than just being the Spider-Man people think you are.
@VioletAeonSnowfield
Жыл бұрын
I don't know that anyone would try and do that with those powers? I mean, if you had powers that revolved around mind control, that would be one thing; but Spider-man's powers? No one would try and set up crimes to stop. Especially not in New York, that's just wasted efforts. More importantly, what criminals would ever go along with that idea? They were beat up and then handed over to the cops by the one that supposedly organized the crime. For what? They get nothing out of the whole exchange.
@MysterySteve
Жыл бұрын
@@VioletAeonSnowfield Well you'd definitely need to be someone with a tremendously large and fragile ego, and there are quite a few of those in the Marvel multiverse. Ones with a lot of time on their hands and lots of motivation to do strange things with it. In terms of being in a city like New York, that'd just making the set-up more believable, while real crime would still be harder to fight than arranged crime. As for getting criminals to agree with it, if you're already scamming people and all that, you could probably pay off some cops or just pay actors with loose moral compasses to play fake cops convincingly. Then it all falls together and those criminals get to run home free after that, probably paid well for their efforts. And, of course, none of this is actually practical. But to continue from a previous point, there are a lot of villains around who would prioritize creative flair over practicality. I don't think this is much of a stretch at all, in the long run.
@FraserSouris
Жыл бұрын
The big flaw with JJJ's argument here is that Spider-Man has been active for over 8 years by this point. Firstly, Like, even if we assume that yes, somehow Spider-Man was setting up these situations to make himself look good, wouldn't someone leak the details eventually over 8 years? Wouldn't some random criminal decide to get some fame by walking up to JJJ and spilling the details on how Spider-Man does it? Wouldn't someone like Yuri pick up that her corrupt cops are dealing with Spider-Man for this and fire them because of it and then issue a manhunt out for Spider-Man? Like after 8 years, JJJ doesn't have even the slightest proof that Spider-Man is doing this. Secondly, why would Spider-Man spent 8 years setting up these fake scenarios, then go and do real scenarios against real Supervillains? Are the Supervillains in on it too? Is Scorpion, the villain JJJ himself made to go against Spider-Man in on it with Spider-Man? Why do none of these villains then say "Hey, Spider-Man and I working together" in order to get less punishment?

I preferred his backstory from the 1994 animated series. That version of the character came off as a hard-ass, but he was a good man who was willing to do anything it took to exonerate a friend. He paid for Peter's wedding in full (even though that Mary Jane was a clone), and he resumed his mantle as an investigative reporter to help Robbie after he got into trouble. He also paid Matt Murdock to represent Peter after he was framed by Fisk for being a traitor to his country. That version of the character was intelligent and was willing to accept when he was wrong. He does acquiesce to Spider-Man on some occasions when it turns out the villain is a genuine nutcase as in Scorpion. It's just that he has a trauma with people wearing masks. He looks at Spider-Man and sees someone who will do bad things even though Spider-Man is a hero.

This is a great example of maybe my only real problem with Spider-Man PS4. They nailed the characterization of every character... except J.J. Jameson, imo. The impression I always had of J.J. was that he was a great journalist with a huge amount of integrity, who just, for one reason or another, thought Spider-Man was a villain and not a hero. And, the major point of the relationship between Jameson and Spider-man was that Jameson didn't NEED to make shit up to blame Spidey on. That, devoid of proper context, it's really easy to make a hero look like a villain. This J.J. kinda throws that up in the air. He's always making up excuses for why this thing could have been "Spider-Man's plan all along" even when he's clearly reaching, like he is here. He rarely reports on real facts, and seems like a little tiny bit of a blowhard. The best J.J.J. scene in film (objectively) is the one in Spider-Man 2, where Dock Ock is holding him in mid-air, asking him about Spider-Man. Peter Parker is right there, hiding behind a desk, and J.J. looks Dock Ock straight in the face and says, "I don't know where the pictures come from, they come in anonymously by mail." J. Jonah Jameson is a hard-ass, a bit of a prick, but when it comes down to it he is a strictly moral man with very strong convictions. And I don't think they nailed the kinder aspects of his character here, focusing entirely on his vendetta with Spider-Man, and I think that's a shame.

JJJ can only be praised here for his imagination. Question: how do we usually determine a scenario that could be explained in multiple ways? Answer: Occam’s Razor. We have a woman claiming Spider-Man did what he does. He rescued a citizen in trouble and protected him against the kidnappers. (This is what most likely occurred & it doesn’t take mental gymnastics to reach this conclusion) We have JJJJ claiming it was all set up through carefully coordinated planning with the kidnappers. Kidnappers take the citizen, then the “play” begins, all just so Spider-Man could look good. (This is possible, but highly improbable. We’d need proof or it sounds too biased to be believed.) Without evidence, we should assume the scenario with the least amount of steps, the woman’s.

I think old Jigsaw Jamson knew Peter Parker was Spiderman all along, and he and Peter would act out this rivalry so that Jameson could sell papers and Peter could get money from the photos. Now every time this up-and-comer has to meet an actual Superhero, he can play the poor martyred catholic angle (that would work well on Captain America) and get in good with the avengers. and because Spiderman is so reviled, he can keep boundaries between Peter and Spiderman and say he cant share his secret identity, (great way to tell girls why you can't go exclusive, or guys, so you can hook up and say you cant have a commitment "it is too much for you") besides how do you stand out as a superhero if every superheroe gets good press, it all gets lost in the noise. Get them to hear unsubstantiated rumors about a hero, get a debate going if he is a Hero, two sides of a debate, That's how you get buzz and become the most talked about, Peter does work at a Newspaper, this spider might have a talent at weaving public relation strategies
