Joseph L Block arriving in Duluth in a brutal Lake Superior Gale! Little different video, due to the difficult conditions we had two cameras going. Included both videos here so I hope everyone enjoys! My girlfriend did say the name of the wrong ship lol (that’s ok! 😂)
Seen a few dramatic departures over the years, but I think this one takes the cake so far for arrivals! Most ships will elect to stay out of the canal during high winds and seas, taking a very large 730ft ship (similar dimensions as the Edmund Fitzgerald for comparison) down a narrow canal in such conditions can be risky. But the crew of the Block apparently wanted off the lake, and I don’t blame them one bit! They sailed by in a hurry!
As spectators, I think we are all a little crazy lol. Gale warnings were in effect with 45-50+ mph gusts. We were all getting blown around, bracing ourselves against the wind. Sideways rain and semi-frozen spray blowing up from the lake made things really miserable for those of us on the pier, blasting water and what felt like ice into our faces and eyes. Keeping camera lenses clear was a loosing battle. The canal pier was flooded with about 3-4 inches of water, filled by 8-10 foot waves breaking through the drainage gaps as well as over the wall!
Unforgettable arrival!
