After Risshu (the first day of autumn) has passed, and the heat wave has ended, typhoons begin to arrive.
The word “typhoon” began to be used after the Meiji period (1868-1912), and until then it was called “nowaki,” which means wind so strong that it splits the grass in the field. It means a wind so strong that it splits the grass in the field.
When the wild storms passed, people visited homes to “visit the wind” and care for the safety of those close to them.
Japan has numerous “visitation” customs, and perhaps it is because people knew that storms also blow in life that they encouraged and comforted each other.
In Kyoto, “Jizo-bon” is held on August 23 and 24.
Jizo Bosatsu is believed to save children from the demons of hell and has been worshipped since the Heian period (794-1185). In Kyoto, where many children died in epidemics and wars, Jizo Bodhisattvas were especially revered, and it is said that there are more than 5,000 Jizo Bodhisattvas in Kyoto City alone. On Jizo-bon, Jizo Bosatsu are taken out from their shrines, washed, made up, and covered with a new apron.
At the festival site, lanterns with the baby's name on them are hung and various events are held for the children, including games, Bon dances, and “Fugo-oroshi” .
