Komyo-ji Temple
In October of every year, Ojuya or Ten-night Memorial Services are held at the great main temple Komyo-ji in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. With a history of more than five centuries, these nenbutsu services were formerly conducted day and night from October 5 to 10, according to the old Japanese calendar reckoning. At present, however, many temples hold them over a shorter period of days. Accounted one of the three major Ojuya services in the Kanto region, the splendid annual Komyo-ji Ojuya lasts for four days, from October 12 to 15.
The Longer Sukhavativyuha Sutra (Muryojukyo), a pivotal text for Pure Land Buddhism, or Jodo Shu, teaches that the merit accruing to ten days and ten nights of good deeds performed in the present world of delusion and suffering surpasses the merit accruing to a thousand years of good deeds performed in the delusion-free Buddha Land.
