Great gun! A drilling means triple. They were survival guns. They were issued to German pilots during World War Two. I have one in 16 gauge and 8mm rimmed. The 9.3 x 74R is identical to the 9.3 x 62 in performance. It was used in Africa for all the dangerous game. 👍

Sorry but that's not true. Drillinge are normal hunting guns in Europe and not survival guns. The "Luftwaffen Drilling" is complete different design like the drilling shown in this video. And the "Luftwaffen Drilling" is as useful for Pilots to survive like mortar for duell use. It was one of the most lunatic ideas of Reichfeldmarschall and Reichsjägermeister Hermann Göring to procure these Drillinge for the pilots of the Luftwaffe. The large number of Drillinge that were never used in an aircraft on an enemy flight is overwhelmingly large. Almost no pilot wanted to take such a giant part into the airplane. The idea of Göring to supply the Luftwaffe with such an overdimmed and for the front use unsuitable gun, was just as idiotic as megalomaniac as the 6th Army in Stalingrad to supply from the air. A complete failure in both cases. PS: I'd owned a Drilling, which I sold again. There was too little hunting use. The shot barrels are rarely used today unless you were hunting flying game or waterfowl, but in that case you are better equipped with a shotgun. Today, Drillinge are more collector's items than useful hunting guns in constant use, at least in Europe.

I’ve always found the Drilling fascinating. The idea of having rifle capabilities along with your double gun is awesome. Just makes me feel better prepared. Now if only the gun makers of today would make an affordable alternative of a modern gun for survival. I’d like to have one. 🤠

The 9.3 x 74R is a great cartridge! I have a BRNO O/U double rifle in that chambering and have been very happy with it. I am sure you will have fun with. BTW, the 16 ga. is the most popular gauge in central and eastern Europe. I also have a Czech made Opava Ferdinand SxS in 16 ga. CHECK THE CHAMBERS!!!! You may find they are 2-9/16" (65mm). This was common in pre-WW2 European guns. It should be marked on the barrel assembly. My pre-war Czech gun (and also an older 16 ga. FN Browning A-5 I have) has 65mm chambers. I cut down and handload shells for them. The danger is that 2-3/4" shells WILL chamber and fire, but they do not fully open and drive up chamber pressures. The chokes (if any) will be marked in "mm" bore diameter at the muzzle, usually on the breech end of the barrel assembly.

9.3mm =.366 cal. and 74mm= 2.9+inches. I've read that the 9.3mm x 74mm is the European equivalent of the .375 H&H. In German the number 3 is Drei. In German that drilling is Dreilling?(I think) Another great post.

Very nice Sauer; well to take care, though: older European 16-gauge guns were chambered to fire a 65-mm case (length). Modern 16-gauge cases are 70 mm, and may cause pressure problems when fired in shorter chambers.

It would be helpful if the commentator would correctly identify the caliber of the rifle. Is it 9.3X72R or 9.3X74R? They are not the same cartridge. It appears to me that the rifle is 9.3X72. The 74R is a bigger cartridge. Lets move on to the shotgun's gauge. Is the gun chambered for 65mm or 70mm shells. Likely, Judging from the side hammers it was built before the end of WWII, likely even before WWI. Likely the shotgun is chambered for 65mm shot shells. 65MM equals 2 1/2". It should not be fired using 2 3/4" shot shells. RST sells the short 16 gauge shells.

My grandfather had a 16 gauge drilling with cocking hammers, which suggests that it was probably one of the older forester models using 9.3x72R. Given the age and condition of these guns, I'd probably want to settle for a newer 7.65R or 7x57R with 12 or 16 gauge smoothbores. Tough to find one in good condition with the matching scope but but I am in no rush.

Not that familiar with European metric cartridges. I do find them fascinating however. Had to look it up in Wiki. "The 9.3×74mmR is of a rimmed, bottleneck design and uses a .366-inch (9.3 mm) diameter bullet, usually weighing 286-grain (18.5 g). According to Hornady, at this weight the velocity is 2,362.20 ft/s (720.00 m/s) and energy is 3,536 ft⋅lbf (4,794 J). This cartridge is used for hunting medium to large game animals and is very popular in Europe for wild boar. It remains a popular cartridge for African safari hunting in countries with more German influence like Namibia, favored as a continental alternative to the more popular .375 H&H Magnum." That said, I'd rather a .375 H&H any day. 😄 Or maybe the .375 Ruger. Who needs a metal detector when Jeremy is on the range?
