Being born in 1892, he was definitely connected to an older, simpler way of life, which I sometimes yearn for and which shows in the world he created.

He, like many other great thinkers of his time, hated what was modern and new. Looking back, he was ahead of his time and predicted the damage that a "modern" world would do to the planet.
@41kils

He was not against progress, technology or novelty. Only damaging industry, overpopulation, and city living. I would be careful not to paint his views in black and white. Also, being born in 1892 and living the life he lived I think would have connected him to how brutal life can be and maybe thus increase the love he had for living simply in a wider world.

@@41kils I understand what you're saying, but what I was referencing was a biography on his life written by Michael White in 2001. There is a passage where it talks about his accademic life as a professor and writter. Yes, I'm sure he dind't hate every aspect of modern life (I.E. medicine, communication and transportation), but he was a firm believer of how the rush to modernization was destroying his country and the world. His world views were pretty clear in that regard.

@@41kils progress and technology are quite entwined with damaging industry, overpopulation, and city-living, I mean, you can easily draw a path from any one to the others. I would guess that if Tolkien were alive today, he would hold these things in contempt even more for their accelerated destruction of the planet and the human experience, which is plainly obvious for any sane individual unfortunate enough to live in this age
@41kils

@@DylanJG1Again I think his judgement would be far less negative than you suppose. He would have contempt for the damage done, but I do not think he would be against industry, increased population and cityliving. Why do you think he would have contempt for these things inherently?

A hard day's work, appreciation for family and tradition, dedication to one's craft, and then at the end of the day, a good pint and a pipe full. Ingredients for a happy life. Tolkien wasn't just a great storyteller, he knew how to find and write about the simple joys in life.

Don't we all? I seek this life even now, and I have since I broke free from the chains set on modern youths. We all deserve such a peaceful existence. Alas, though, I don't believe many of us have the dignity and grace of Professor Tolkien in executing it. I certainly do not. Even in my greater age, I still behave in a rather adventurous and less than mature fashion; which is quite fine, and immaturity is a culture in itself, but I cannot lay claim to the effortless sophistication of the Godfather of modern fantasy.

Tolkien put a bit of himself into the Hobbits...by his own admission no less, specifically in letter 213. He liked gardens, trees, unmechanized farmlands, pipe smoking, good plain food (not French), ornamental waistcoats, and mushrooms. He had a simple sense of humor, went to bed late, and got up late when possible. He did not travel much. In my opinion much like how Thorin thought during the Hobbit...if more people were like Hobbits and valued good food and friends, it would be a better world.
