Although Suites in the French style were very popular in Germany during Bach's time, he did not seem to take to them like other composers did. In spite of this the four Suites he leaves us are extremely popular, and are seen as great works, even though he probably did not share that view. The first in C Major is in seven sections, which are in the form of an overture followed by a suite of dances. BVW 1066 has been an essential staple in concert halls since the 19th century and was often performed long before the Baroque Revival of the 1960s and 70s. This is why we have recordings of it going back to the early 20th century by many artists who are not immediately thought of as Baroque performers. Van Beinum's performance of the entire set with the Concertgebouw is quite nice and we will be sharing them all in the future.
