The Prelude and Fugue in G major (BWV 541) has been dated to the first Leipzig years, around 1725. This piece too existed in an earlier version , with a middle movement forming the third movement of a trio sonata in e minor. The prelude starts with a vertiginous descent on the manual from the top to the bottom its register, whitch then returns to its starting point to join the other voices. This opening theme relates to both the spirit of the Northern toccatas and to the Vivaldian technique of varying blocks of sound which are based on the elementary harmonic alternation of tonic and dominant. An almost uninterrupted semiquaver motion is passed from part to part, often accompanied by loud repeated chords. The very directional character of the prelude and its strong thematic coherence clearly show Bach's fingerprints and his highly individual "instrumental" style. The joie de vivre and jubilation which dominate this piece have made it one of the most-loved and most-played of Bach's organ works.
