It might be weird of me to say this but this scene is quite brilliant. Everything works to present this warped reality that witch has bestowed upon them both. It gives us an insight into each of the characters. We begin to see how reality looks to each of them and what their plans are for the future. The music is perfectly eerie, making us feel like we are falling deeper and deeper into the madness of their delusions. Heck even the paper people work in that aspect as they are yet another product of this twisted reality brought upon us all. The constant questioning 'are you happy?' works to disturb us and to make us question this world we have been brought to. It's all merely an illusion just a twisted reality that spirals quickly into insanity as the song draws to a close before Jack finally breaks it. It's still creepy but there is brilliance in madness. In a more adult movie a scene like this would be amazing.

This movie is so good that it is legitimately my favorite ever screen adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk. What was added in adaptation (witch, giant as witch’s son, a princess, and princess/animal enchantments/Jack’s dog Crosby) always should have been there in the original story.
@traewilson5127

It's kinda funny how, in their attempt to copy Disney's formula to appeal to Western audiences, they accidentally wound up making the story significantly fresher than it ever was before or, frankly, since. It's a lousy fairy tale, frankly, which is why most faithful adaptations stink. By deviating so far from it, the team behind the movie made one of the best adaptations. More of an ur-fairy tale that happens to use Jack and the Beanstalk as its foundation. Despite all its flaws, there's something strangely captivating about it. It keeps popping back into my head, long after I watched the Nostalgia Critic's video about it (the last I ever watched from him,) then watched the film and as many of its dubs as I could find.
@GigaPhoenix9001

I know this is late but since this movie came on Nostalgia Critic's editorial of the WEIRDEST, I came to listen to this too. Btw I think someone asked for lyrics and this is a hard one to follow so it would probably help everyone and be fun. Two of you stand, here in front of me tonight Are you HaPPY??? It's your wish to be married now, am I right? Are you HaPPY??? Will you both stay together till you're old and grey? Can you stand living with eachother till that day? Well then CaN yOu??? Sickness or in health Will you help each other OuT??? Will you share your wealth? You must tell me if you have ANY-doubts- Is this the man whom you take as your husbend, Tell me it (p)is(z) Is this the women you take as your wife? Tell me is ShEEEE??? (he loves her) Are you two in love? (she loves him) Speak, is it true? (a perfect match) Do you love this man (yes, they will be very happy) Do(oo) you- (say that you love him) take this women to (say that you love him) be with you too (say that you love him) Are you in love? A(aaaaaa)re you are you in love, I- (speak it is true)... (STOP) * Also the mother was BOOKING annoying to try to hear over, but I think it's saying that she put a spell on both of them to be "HaPPIly in love", that is why the daughter is so blank and HaPPY!!! probably to get the treasure herself, so while none of it is explained and it's all...CRYPTIC AS HELL, there is a story and plot hidden under even this bat shit insane...master piece. >:D

I watched it when I was very little and i found it fascinating, it inspired me to do art and to be weird in a good way and appreciate it. I think it was made by a genius cast. They had real fun doing it and it's so original. I also think they made some scenes so odd and psychedelic to contrast simple story behind it. As I understood it was all about the main character choosing between recognition (from a mother who always accused him of being naive fool and a waste) and believing in miracles despite of appearing to be an idiot. Farmboy helps the princess to get away from her poisoned illusions and gain her true self even if she stays in her homeland forever. In reverse she thanks him and accepts him as a brave good guy not some sort of trash as he used to hear from his mother. There is a great parallel between main character and antagonist the giant. Antagonist also has a mother witch who accuses him (but in a more hateful way) and even when he tried to take control of himself he didn't succeed cause it was a rebel act, not a grown up move. The crashed witch robot doll (as an allegory) hinted he saw her as a play\game rather a human. So in the end main character instead of wealth gains self recognition and in the same time returns in a real world without loosing faith in miracles. I think this story shows more if you will see through and has a deep meaning. It's just wasn't told straight in the face and uses lots of allegories. The truly weird part of all was a translation cause it's damn awry and lost a lot meaning. Dialogs weren't so sweet and puppy, just simple to understand what was hidden behind words and to understand motivation of the characters. Thanks for reading, if you made it here. I'm in love with this cartoon from early childhood and find it underrated.

Just by going off of some stupid levels of logic: might be some artifacts she cannot use in the castle without becoming part of that royal family, even if by proxy. The right of inheritence and all. Like the wand we see her use in her fantasy, she would need to become part of royalty to use.

Sent by the Critic. I never saw this as I kid, so I find this scene more hilarious than creepy. Even though most of it is quite disturbing, I just can't take it seriously with that priest. "Are you happy?"

It's too bad you don't have the rest of this scene. The part I remember that kinda scared me as a kid was when the giant stomped on his mother. I forget if it was on purpose or accidental. After she was stomped it was revealed that she was a clock work mechanical machine.

It was on purpose. He was sick of being controlled by her. She was magically willing him to step on Jack and Princess Margaret, and he made his own decision to step on her, instead.

Even when the paper minister says "ARE YOU HAPPY?", he sounds like Barry Dennen who played Pilate in the 1973 movie version one year before this movie! When I heard Pilate in that movie, this immediately came to mind!

I feel kinda sorry for Tulip tbh. He genuinely loved Margaret, but of course she only "loved" him because his mom put her under a spell (not that I blame her for not loving him of course--he's not really her type, if you know what I mean). And his mom is an abusive old hag who was using him to claim Margaret's throne.

Those paper men are similar to the paper men Yubaba uses to attack Haku in Spirited Away.
