I have long screamed at my TV for people to just sing the anthem as it is written. Its power comes from its simplicity and lack of showiness. Yet people constantly try to gussy it up and show off. It's a humble song. The song isn't about how awesome we are and we conquer all and look at us, yea! It's literally about how the symbol of our country survived through an intense attack on a fort, survived as the symbol of our freedom and bravery. Jack Black did the spirity of the National Anthem great honor with his performance. You can hear the deep respect in his voice. It isn't about him, it's about the anthem.

Jack Black is a consumate performer and an incredibly talented musician. People seem surprised that he would do this so seriously. You'd be surprised just how respectful the vast majority of comedians actually are. Jack Black knows when to turn it off. His voice is unbelievable. Near perfect singing of the anthem. There are 2 spots pretty much everyone sings wrong. He sang 1 of them wrong, but it is the minor one that isn't very obvious. He nailed the big one. The only people I've ever heard actually sing the National Anthem correctly are the military. But I will absolutely grant this is the best I have ever heard it sung outside of that. Phenomenal voice and I absolutely had to deal with all the dust in this room.

I bet on some level, this was a proud moment for him. Nobody gets as good at singing as he is without taking it quite seriously and being passionate about it. His niche and his schtick is acting like he's never serious, but he's able to do that because it's grounded in the foundation of being a supremely good singer. This was a time to let his full talents come through without having to sell it with comedy.
