The genius of this movie - Jack Burton doesn't have a damn clue what is going on through the whole film. Essentially he's all of us :)
@McD5791
8 жыл бұрын
I think that's half the reason why the film didn't do so well at the cinema. The movie studio didn't know how to market it back in the '80's. Was it action, comedy or horror? Was the hero really the sidekick? Was the sidekick really the hero? and so forth, etc. ...thank goodness for home video, then - that's where the movie's cult status was really built.

I feel like that's often the first moment when new viewers start really understanding his character lol. Up to that point the movie is just kinda quickly moving and it's not totally clear what we should expect from him, and then the gangsters get in his face and his "Where'd you get that?" immediately tells us that he's not the hardcore ever-ready action hero we're trained to expect, and makes the viewer laugh and breaks the tension. And then the rest of the movie makes much more sense from there. It's such a great line.

That really was funny as hell ! But it was a goof "Jack describes Lo Pan as being able to shoot light out of his mouth, but when Jack encounters Lo Pan in the alley after running through him with his truck, Lo Pan shoots light from his eyes before light comes out of mouth. Since Jack was already blinded by the light from Lo Pan's eyes he couldn't possibly have seen the light come out of Lo Pan's mouth. (IMDB).

Ok. Here is why this movie is AMAZING (Spoilers) Kurt Russel's character "Jack Burton" is treated as the main character, but he's actually the sidekick/comic relief. I didn't get this after watching the movie, but only after hearing the DVD commentary from Russel/Carpenter. Now it's endlessly watchable for me :) I don't know any other movie that is able to do a role reversal like this. Even during production, ppl involved with the film did not understand this. That is what makes this film so amazingly unique. The main character is NOT the main character. Kurt is the sidekick! LOL

A bumbling white guy who isn't as cool as he tries to be, is uninformed, and is regularly outperformed by his more diverse team. Seems like the exact same thing at a surface level but I never even put the connection together because despite being the same thing in one way, it is played the opposite way and thus goes from feeling witty to passé. Jack Burton is set up as a hero from the very beginning, Egg Shen literally declares it in the opening scene. Throughout the movie characters respect Jack and he acts with confidence. It is only revealed throughout the course of the film that Jack isn't the hero we expect. Peter Quill however is set up as the dope, and characters treat him as such, he acts with the flare and personality of a hero but his teammates constantly rag on him and it is only in the finale that Quill proves he is the hero and gets his respect(until the sequel when he is impotent and the butt of every joke again). Guardians took the non-heroic main character concept and made it as obvious, formulaic, and vanilla as possible. The handsome confident strong male not being the hero has come full circle from innovative take to hackneyed joke.

The thing is, I lived in China for seven years (5 in Beijing) and while this movie has bugger-all to do with actual Chinese culture, Jack Burton's "wait, what the Hell? What's going on here?" reaction throughout the movie is pretty much an accurate portrayal of expat life there. In short, "they got China wrong, but they got the confused white guy trying to make his way through China spot-on." I know this because for seven years the confused white guy basically doing what Jack does at 1:28... was me.
