This music helps me to better understand Quantum Physics; whereas the "event horizon" is where ever the listener is in space and time; and each musician masterfully applies all attributes of the particular force of nature they represent; Jack is time (continuum), Holland is the "gravitational force" , Pat is a cosmic event , a star (literally & figureably) and Herbie represents the "singularity", the black hole that absorbs even light particles (ideas) into the unknown....
@ianbuxton8332

@Shrimping Business Speaking seriously, this group WAS overwhelmingly powerful, as are the 2 distinct branches of post-Newtonian physics: general and special relativity on the one hand, and the interpretational confusion and conflict engendered by quantum mechanics of n the other. Shadow Dance FLOWS, in it's magnificently stark, brilliant and hugely impersonal way, as do these 2 huge pillars of our contemporary understanding of physical reality. The WHOLE OF reality? Fascinating philosophical question.. ) .. And exactly LIKE these theories there is a beautiful yet strictly disciplined FLOW of technique and ideas whose a solute MASTERY had taken its practitioners a considerable portion of their LIFETIMES to attain. In the cases both of superb modern jazz such as Shadow Dance and GR and QM within physics, similarly the theorist/ listener simply DOESN'T KNOW IN ADVANCE where these forms of state-of-the-art thinking and interlocking musical expression are TAKING us. Incidentally, Shrimping Business, what's YOUR take on the vexed question of the interpretation of quantum mechanics?

When I think of the greatest improvisational musicians, these four are always on that list. And there are so many others, for example ,you have to mention Corea and Cobham, just out of respect. But, then there’s Pat Metheny. He just operates on another level. Not to say he’s better, or more talented, than these other aforementioned greats. But he just goes to places, that most musicians cant even contemplate. When he goes off on one of his playing tangents, the others in the group must be thinking “ I sure hope he comes back to us at some point !” . Kudos to Jack and Dave for keeping the rhythm section perfectly timed around Pat and Herbie’s improvisational swinging. This is just a fantastic version of Shadow Dance. Wow!

fretbuzz59 I once read that he made a decision way back that he would only play one sound on the synth guitar, lest the anticipation of the sound coming out of the guitar would draw attention away from the tune. Pat is probably the greatest jazz musician, composer, improviser, you name it. He defines the term serious musician. Check the Seminario clip on KZitem. Incredible. 9 over Reggae or whatever it’s name (the first song) was composed by Pat and Jack.

What a monster track this is, i like how each musician really adds something to this piece as Jack DeJohnette kicks off the proceedings on the drum kit followed closely by Dave Holland on bass and Herbie Hancock on piano who all come on stage one by one to their respective instruments as the music really starts to build up slowly, until finally at 4:59 Pat Metheny comes on stage to make his presence felt in the only way he knows how as business really picks up with all of them together as one as the song fully comes to life. What an unbelieveable perfomance. It doesn't get any better than these 4 true legends.

I try to never say anything negative about music since everyone has their own opinion, but the drums and bass alone made a really beautiful duet- I loved the way they played together.
