I’m about to cry. I watched this religiously as a kid in the 90’s. To me this was as essential to my early childhood as Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, Blue’s Clues, etc. This was also my introduction to one of my favorite pieces, “Arabesque” by Debussy. I’m turning 30 next week, and I’m still as amazed by space and the stars as I was as a kid, and Mr. Horkheimer was my introduction to those worlds. I’m so sad I was never able to tell him how much he meant to me. Hope you’re resting amongst the stars, Jack. ✨🌟✨

Yes, the PBS nostalgia hits so hard! I used to watch Star Gazer after I put my daughter to bed and she's a grown woman now. Reminds me how much I miss those times. Thanks to Jack, we once laid out on the hill next to our house and saw the most amazing meteor shower (Quadrantids if I recall correctly). It was one of those extremely rare 25 to 50 per minute type showers, and we got to share it with our child.

I remember watching him as a kid in the mid and late 90's before midnight. My mom would get mad for staying up late lol but it was well worth it. It is because of Jack and Carl Sagan that I have such an avid love for astronomy. It almost brings me to tears when I hear that intro music again (nostalgia) and just finding out that Jack passed away in 2010. R.I.P Jack

It's Isao Tomita's version of Arabesque No. 1, from his album, Snowflakes are Dancing. I would eagerly await that song as a kid, especially in the summer. I would then slip outside to look all over the night sky. My little brother was the first to notice the very dim satellites quickly passing overhead, though. We grew up at a very high point in Western Pennsylvania, with few city lights.

You see this a lot more in languages like Spanish and French. In the English language, this is largely scrapped as it pays more tribute to Norse deities, more specifically Tuesday for Tiw (Tyr), the Norse god of war (similar to Ares and Mars); Wednesday for Wodanaz (Odin), Thursday for Thor, and Friday for Freya, the Germanic/Norse goddess of love and beauty (similar to Venus and Aphrodite to the Romans and Greeks). On a related note, Saturday and Sunday in Spanish and French are named to refer to the Sabbath and the Lord's days, as a shout-out to Christianity's influence on the Gregorian calendar.

I was up later than usual one night when I was a kid, flipping channels while everybody else was asleep when I stumbled upon this show about the stars on our local PBS and this guy, Jack Horkheimer, with his enthusiasm for the stars and his apparent good guy vibes, I was immediately hooked. From that night on, I stayed up one night a little longer than the rest to catch him and learn what he had to say about the stars for that week. Now, whenever I'm outside at night, I do as Jack always bid us and keep looking up to see what I may in the stars.

Man, I remember watching this come on after Doctor who with my brother and father when I was 7 or 8 years old. The funny thing is that (and my brother also feels this way so I'm not the only one) this was always a little bit scary for me. The music, combined with the subject matter made both me and my brother feel a sense of the empty void that is space and fear of not knowing what exists out there. Like we both felt a sense of lovecraftian horror. Lol... Good times.

Leyenda1 It's not a band but a Debussy piece called "The Girl With the Flaxen Hair" and it's played by Isao Tomita.... all on an analog Moog synthesizer with many overdubs. The album was on RCA and was called "Snowflakes are Dancing". My older brother had it on LP when it came out in 1974 so I grew up with it.
