Nice to see that this video is still viewed and liked. When i uploaded this video 10 years ago, it had DVD quality, no letterbox bars on the top and bottom, and crystal clear audio. KZitem has re-encoded (more correctly, transcoded) their catalogue several times since then, each time leading to worse and worse quality for older videos. We will never see the original quality again from right after the upload for many old videos. But i decided to keep this online, you can still understand it if you listen closely, and it's still very relevant!

I think this DVD was even more in demand when Tony talked about this topic in his channel Every Frame A Painting. Check out his video on Jackie, really good stuff.

@Cream Soda Yes, but i don't have the source file anymore, i'm afraid. Back then, i had no idea that the quality would degrade as much as it did by simply keeping it on KZitem for some years. I thought it would more or less stay as it was. But KZitem themselves never go back to the originally uploaded file, they just re-encode the already encoded file over and over again with newer video codecs when they become available, in order to save them space and transfer volume / bandwitdh. I don't know how old you are and if you remember audio cassettes or video tapes, but it's like making a copy of a copy of a copy... you think it sounds/looks similar enough, but the cumulative damaging effect is undeniable.

So true Jackie. American films cut way to much in fight scenes, it gives me a headache. True action movie has fluid fighting that makes sense.

Some directors/editors go so overboard I honestly get motion sickness from the cuts every half a second during any fight scene.

I totally know what he means by editing. I use to edit my films the american way and it looked too choppy. In this clip Jackie says that your eyes can't catch it that fast when you edit it that way. I started editing the way that Jackie and most HK directors do, and the shots looks way smoother.

Boy I can listen to Jackie talk in depth about making movies for hours. I wish he was speaking in Chinese and they just subtitled it though because even though his English is pretty darn good you can tell he’s still struggling to get his ideas across. His brain is working faster than his mouth can keep up with.

He didn't address this, but the undercranking he did in his films were awesome, and gave it a quality and rhythm that holds up quite well.

another thing Ive noticed is how some fight/action (mainly fight) scenes seem to take place in the dark when (1) its not even night time and (2) it might be under something or indoors, but just two steps away there is some clear uninterrupted lighting. I mean shaking is one thing but to darken the whole scene to the point you're in the cinema straining your eyes?lol And it didnt even have anything to do with a surprise attack or something like that.

That's why Jackie is the best for action editing. He knows FOR REAL what is powerful on screen, what works. I've always thought the wide angle shot is the best for a fight cos you can enjoy the moves and the action going on is clearer. Jackie and Sammo know that. I learned that from them.

I remember the scene he was showing for editing. It bears remarkable homage and significance to Spielberg's work on "Temple of Doom" (IJ)... with Kate Capshaw in the (purposely annoying but enchanting) role of Willie Scott. 😁

Hope Jackie is well. Something I saw in the news seemed to indicate his houses have been "occupied by government" and suggested he may be caught up in Xi's "anti cult figure" movement. Chan has always considered himself a "solid member of the CCP"- so it would be very sad. Hope got it wrong! FR
