Jackie remembers his father with bitterness. It's always the father who abandons the family, never the mother. Pop hits the road while mom is left with 5 kids to support, scrubbing floors or whatever she can do to bring in some money. Those moms are the real heroes. That's why athletes who make it always give all credit to her. They know what she did.

Very well done and very inspiring for all Americans and the people of the world. Jackie's restraint in the face of ugly remarks was the greatest testimony of his courage. I could not have done what Jackie did and I am reputedly outspoken. Jackie Robinson helped not only people of colour, but helped to make this a better America. God bless you, Jackie Robinson.

Scott, Fleetwood Walker was the first black player in professional in pro ball, but it was really pre-MLB. The major league era really begins in 1903. Furthermore, Fleetwood Walker's entrance was quickly followed by his exit - it didn't leave a lasing impact. Jackie literally changed the face of the sport. Jackie broke the color barrier, something Fleetwood was not in a position to do.

Tell you what's amazing and not many young people know this. Robinson, who lead the league in "being thrown at" did not wear a batting helmet; none of the player's did back then. And to think every time up there he had to believe a baseball was coming right at his head. Moreover, the pitcher throwing said ball did not even get a warning. This man had guts personified.

It would have been really nice and befitting if ALL of professional sport had retired the number 42, but Baseball did a beautiful thing by starting Jackie Robinson day.

I think the reason why Jackie Robinson had trouble etc was simply because he taking the spot of someone on the team. And not because he was black. I think the political narrative is slightly slanted.. In todays players would be reluctant if an outsider got a place in the team instead of them who'd be waiting for his chance.
