@@douglashall2141 I grew up in the 70's and 80's. I remember my dad complaining about the music and the long haired bands. He would always say that the music of the 40's and 50's was the best and the music in the 60's 70's and 80's was trash. But nice try. Ever notice how economic catastrophe seems to follow republican presidents? Regan led us to the S&L crisis. George W led us to the 2008 crisis. Trump led us to a failed Covid response’and recession. All of them spiraled debt more than democratic presidents. That’s more telling.

It had it's moments...but, no. The '80s were in many ways the antithesis of this movie, whose spirit belonged to the freewheeling 70s. Shortly after the release of this movie, in fact during the release of this movie as I remember, the dubious reality of the 1980s kicked in; Ronald and Nancy, Reaganomics, sanctimonious PSAs, neo Cons (that bother us still), obnoxious, self-serving Yuppies, GenXers listening to aging rockers, over the top punk-influenced pop, houses that were 3/4s garage, and worst of all, AIDs! The last of these itself, put quite a damper on being young in the 1980s. Also, if any incident should happen in schools and college dormitories, were some irresponsible idiot does something that endangers the well being of themselves, or others, there was nothing that new regulations couldn't solve. Don't like the quiet hours and restricted access? look to the 80's and you will find the source of your discontent.

50-ish fellow here. Thanks to all of you for writing comments. They are heartwarming to read. Some trivia some may not know about this movie: The actual school it is based on is Clairmont (sp?) High School in San Diego. A young reporter disguised himself as a student at the school for some time, then wrote the book Fast Times at Ridgemont High... After high school, the fellow Spicoli was based on tried to join the Navy but was turned down due to his marijuana use. He became a different sailor and was on the Exxon Valdes when all that oil was spilled...The character who was based on the fellow who dated Jennifer Jason Leigh's character threatened a lawsuit at one point but acquiesced when given a guitar...I thought I'd remember more than I just wrote. Take care and be well, all.

My father thought sitting outside a Paris cafe 1945 after France was liberated in World war 2, with all the beautiful French girls kissing him while listening to Frank Sinatra records, was the best times, and that he felt sorry for my generation (Woodstock) (Boomers), for having to listen to all that loud music blaring out of machines.

OMG I hated the '80s except for David Bowie … which means nothing because we are both music lovers. The most recent direct contact I had with this format was Tom Petty's speech at Musicares just before the 40th anniversary tour which killed him (enter previously Dave Stewart everyone's on cocaine, he needs 9 months of rehab almost lost his hand, wrapped himself in the confederate flag for which he was sorry later … the one mistake his biographer Warren Zane made was to 1) dedicate this book to his 2 sons and 2) tell them they would never understand this music. more to say but will leave it there; the music is eternal.

Over time, Hollywood took that enchanting heavenly colour and brilliant lighting out of film. Today everything thing is shot in half dark shadows. I was 21 when this movie came out and although a lot of the actors were playing the role of teenagers, I think most of them were my age. Terrific movie and a sort of “breaking from innocence” theme chronicling a lot of the struggles a lot of us experienced in high school.
