When this song first played i was early twenties. Now I'm retired. A blink of an eye. Where did the time go.

I was 15, just retired this year, seems like yesterday.....I wish we listened to the 'old fogies' back then that told us time flies. We thought we'd be young forever, bullet proof, no fear. Now, we're the 'old fogies' and I tell the young kids to live life, squeeze the juice out of it, because it really is gone in the blink of an eye. We get busy living life and forget to live life. Thanks JB.

I also started listening to this song in the '70s. I still have the album. I have always very much liked the song but always found the lyrics chilling because of "They say, in the end it's the wink of an eye" and "I'm going to be a happy idiot And struggle for the legal tender". I have frequently offered the same sentiment to my senior prom date (now wife), then today I see my name (minus 1 letter) speak of the same realization ( I also just retired). Thank you for posting John Eas_on

I’m… speechless, with the salty taste of my own tears. I’m 55 now, and was so young when I first heard this song; completely unaware of how much depth and complex meaning is within those lyrics. But today, it hit smack in the middle of my soul. Timeless, and even more beautiful today than it ever was. Jackson is a poet extraordinaire with a vulnerability and honesty that our world will ALWAYS need. I was 25 when this song was released in 1976 and it struck me deeply, bringing to my awareness the many ways in which I had already compromised my goals and self-respect. I'm 72 now and writing poetry that reflects the incredible journeys our 'Baby-Boomer' generation . Jackson remains a powerful muse for me and a 'silent comrade' in the middle of the night when I am writing, crying and seeking comfort from the chaos and darkness of our world today. Jackson Browne, not only did I have the great pleasure of seeing you in 1981, but I also worked the show. I was a "House Roady" (stage tech.) for a college auditorium. The crew that wasn't working the show, itself, hung out in the cat walks and rafters. When you sang, Load Out, which you dedicated to us and looked right at us in the rafters we let out a scream that surprised the audience. Throughout the day, the question kept circulating, Does he really play his piano after the show? If so, how often? True to the legion, as we were doing Tear Down, you came out in a clean T-shirt and played for about 25 minutes. A thrill that still excites me 40 years later. Thank you.

"I had been thinking about what it takes to become a success in the music industry." As I laid there I heard Jackson, working on a song. He would pound out a few more notes and words, then do it again and again!" I realized then, there were no shortcuts, you just worked hard at your craft and you didn't give up!" End quote. I do not know how it happened but Jackson Browne and the Eagles were meant to be together. I do not think I want to belong in a world that will not have them in it.

Wow! Decades after first hearing this it still gives goosebumps. ‘Are You there for the pretender?’. Short answer - yes. At the end of the day we are all pretenders, all doing the best we can, which grace assures is sufficient. Thanks JB for all the years of wisdom and melody.

"Caught between the longing for love and the struggle for the legal tender ... " ... just a year younger than Jackson .. his music has always been a part of my life and consciousness. All I can say is that it is not life that is short. Life is long. It is youth that is short, much much too short. And old age just goes on and on, how cruel ... because we remember so so clearly that sweet short youth. "Are you there ? Say a prayer for the pretender. Who started out so young and tender ... "

I found that girl, put our dark glasses on, did it till our strength was gone, after a good nap we did it again for days at time, we went in different directions later. Ahh great memories though. No regrets. A great artist will help someone paint a picture in the mind of a good memory,. Jackson you have that gift, good job partner!

I have been listening to Jackson Browne for over 45 years through the highs and lows, the good and the bad times and still when he sings and I listen I can see myself and my life in his songs, it's as if he sees both the commonality and the unique rareness of us all in himself and so reflects and expresses those things in his music. "Thank-You" Jackson.👏❤

Jackson Browne has always had a very distinctive, heavy piano style. I understand that he finds it easier to be a front-man for a band when he is playing a guitar, but I've always preferred his performances when he plays piano. I have recognized Jackson on recordings of other artists where he is playing the piano and his voice isn't featured; nobody plays quite like him. I also get the impression that he composes at a piano, and that him solo at a piano is the 'truest' version of one of his compositions.
