JFRD responded to an industrial area with reports of a tank on fire with 80,000 gallons of asphalt on fire and multiple other tanks close to this tank. Among the crews responding was the hazmat team.
The asphalt was being transferred from one tank to another. To help the process, the asphalt is heated to assist in the transfer. The temperature got too hot, and the asphalt ignited causing what was reported to be a loud bang followed by fire.
The tanks are protected with interior extinguishing systems, but this fire proved to be too much for that system and we were called.
Response was quick, a water source was established immediately and a ladder pipe was set up upon arrival. Command determined that crews would cool the tank from the ladder pipe while ground monitors were set up on the rear side. While all this was going on, the Hazardous Materials Team monitored the temperature of the tank that caught fire along with the surrounding tanks.
The ground monitors were never put into play as the ladder pipe sufficiently cooled the tanks in question.
No injuries were reported as a result of this incident. City BIO was called out and determined that no hazardous product was released that would harm the citizens or the environment.
Crews cleaned up and went back into service.
