JFRD responded to a commercial building fire at an exotic bird hospital with reports of an explosion to oxygen tanks. Upon arrival crews were met with heavy smoke from the rear of the building and an aggressive attack was made. By the time the attack was made, the fire had already breached the attic space and burnt through the rear part of the roof.
Also encountered by initial arriving crews were hospital employees running back into the building to rescue all the animals that they could...staff reported to command that two pets remained unaccounted for to their knowledge, while command assigned additional searches for the one lizard and one bird in question.
That crew followed the staff's instructions to the possible location of each of these animals and both were then found...the lizard was alive and well, but unfortunately, the bird was beyond resuscitation and perished in the fire.
Two civilians were transported from this fire to the hospital with non life threatening injuries. No firefighters were injured at this scene.
Initial reports were of an explosion of an oxygen tank...preliminary evidence point in that direction, but the Bureau of Fire, Arson, and Explosives Investigations were called in to investigate the cause.
Sit back and watch and listen as this scene unfolds...
