Pat mentioned this album in the book ”Conversations with Charlie Haden” by Josef Woodard. ”Honestly everybody sounds great on it (the album) except me. I sound totally weird on it…We didn’t even know we were making a record…I got there and he had this huge amplifier and a wah-wah pedal, and he (Paul) said ”play through this”. I don’t think I’d ever seen a wah-wah pedal. So most of my part on this record is me going wah wah wah (laughs).”

I think Pat played and sounds great (albeit unlike his today well known sound), totally in tune w/ mid 1970s Jazz Rock sound. The only problem IMO is he is way too low in the mix.

Actually this album was recorded and released in 1974, not '76. In any event thanks for sharing, this album has been long since out of print and impossible to find, a pity, because its' a great early documentation of both Jaco and Pat Metheny - Whereas Jaco's sound here is already fully formed, Pat sounds as much in a 'Jazz-Rock-Fusion' bag as he would ever be, like someone else wrote, displaying a kind of Coryellian/McLaughlin-esque influence and using effect pedals, in a tone that is quite unlike the Pat we've come to know. But to be fair, the whole album has that Classic early 1970s Fusion sound/jam-vibe not unlike Miles' Bitches Brew.

Actually, as you can see from this summary of all editions of the album (Discogs - www.discogs.com/master/view/49066 ), the first edition of the album in this and in all other versions (mine is the Japanese of 1986) is actually 1976, as I wrote in the title. The session in New York (Blue Record Studio) dates back to June 1974. However still a thousand thanks for your interesting comment. Best wishes. Luca

Any improvising musician can hear that this is a rare and incredible document that will stand the test of time. These are fine musicians picking all the right notes--but completely irrespective of melody, I just have to say that the iconic "MWOW" sound of a fretless electric jazz bass is, musicality aside, one of the most beautiful tonal sounds an instrument can produce. It's right up there with Uilleann pipes for me, and hearing that tonal palette in the hands of a master only makes it sweeter.

I picked this up on CD at a used shop almost 20 years ago. Kind of noodly but kind of fun. Pat Metheny's playing is unrecognizeable to my ears, with that phase shifter hiding his signature tone. I believe they cover a few Carla Bley numbers (Paul Bley's daughter). I'm sure his instincts were right in immediately breaking up the band after the "line ups around the block", still, too bad Paul Bley didn't "milk it" a bit and give us a little more... a forgotten fusion gem. I imagine they were using Bley's technique of "improvising structure" for some of this material.

@tiluriso
5 жыл бұрын
Paul Bley himself explained it. The record was an unassuming, impromptu studio registry of the live gigs that the 4 of them had been doing in NYC as Bley's quartet - The album originally came out with the title: 'Pastorius, Metheny, Ditmas, Bley', in mid 1974. It was released on Bley's own 'Improvising Artists' label and to Paul's great surprise, it became a huge seller, (remember, 1974 was arguably the height of the Jazz-Rock-Fusion era), and according to Bley 'The record became too successful..' , outselling all his other albums combined...Bley became frightened by it's massive, unexpected success believing that expectations would pressure him 'getting a light show and smoke bombs'...in other words he feared the expected pressure to repeat its success and 'go bigger', so apparently he decided not to reissue it...crazy, if you ask me. Correction: Indeed recorded in '74, but only released in 1976, 2 yrs later! Why? That baffles me. I guess Bley was already suspecting it would be big and so the pressure to repeat its success, so he held it back, waited out to let the 'scene' cool out. Nevertheless, 2 yrs later, w/ Disco already the new trend in town, it still hit bigger than anything else, probably also because in the meantime Metheny and especially Jaco had became know via their first solo debuts - and Jaco especially so because of his simultaneous, parallel debut with Weather Report's 'Black Market'.
