On the 201st day, I made a pilgrimage to the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River and visited the Dead Sea.
I took a public bus from Muhajireen Station in Amman to Al Rama, 40 km west. The cost is only 1 dinar. From Al Rama, you have to look for a ride to the Jordan River Visitor Center, which is still 10 kilometers away, which is not difficult to find.
The entrance fee to the site is a bit expensive, 12 dinars ($17), because apart from including a guided tour, it may also cover security costs because the Jordan River is the border with the Israeli-controlled West Bank.
The tour bus departed from the visitor center and drove towards the Jordan River. In the distance, you can see several church buildings from respected institutions with Jericho in the background.
Our guide took us to the traditional site where John baptized Jesus. Unfortunately, climate change and human work have caused the Jordan River to recede. Now, it is not as deep and wide as it used to be. In the past, the width of the Jordan River at this point could reach 160 meters. Now, the width was only 10 meters at the spot I visited. On the opposite side, the Israeli flag was visible.
The river was brown and reminded me why Naaman did not want to take a dip into this river. The story of Naaman happened in this place and became the prototype of John's baptism. I tried dipping my feet and washing my hands and face with the water of Jordan. It turned out to be very refreshing.
I continued to visit one of the churches, which stood on the foundations of an ancient church. It looks like an Orthodox church. They have a museum that holds several memorabilia, such as the paintings of Elijah and John the Baptist. Allegedly, Elijah was taken up to heaven not far from this place.
I continued hitchhiking to the Dead Sea, to the Free Beach, a beach on the Dead Sea that's free to the public and not fenced off like in the resort area. There, I enjoyed floating effortlessly. It was an interesting experience.
For the next few days, I will rest in Amman while figuring out how to reach my next destination.
