Was at college with people from British Aerospace in 1982 in the Falklands and they said that things that would have taken years happened in weeks if not days. It's good to keep your capabilities at home.

Interesting series of videos you’ve made about RAF aircraft in the first Gulf War. You seem to summarise that: 1) Tornado F3’s were held back from the front line because of a lack of capability 2) Tornado GR1’s couldn’t target their designated targets so had to be accompanied by old Buccaneers. 3) Jaguars didn’t have the modern avionics to be able to be front line strike aircraft, or fly at night. Maybe the RAF was more suited to the north Europe theatre of operations but the aircraft they had on the front line seemed to be utterly inadequate for a relatively straightforward war.

Nice summary. Low-level weapons delivery was and is still effective, assuming the advantage of being at low level, ie using terrain masking to minimise exposure time to threats, is applicable to the route and target. Of course a lot of this theatre was quite open and flat! But many SAMs have a minimum engagement height that can be exploited, and the RAFs principal anti-airfield weapon, JP233, could only be delivered at low-level. Although out of the gun envelope, aircraft are more vulnerable to SAMs at medium level. The change to medium level was made only when the SEAD campaign had progressed far enough to make it workable, but aircraft were still lost even at medium level. The Buccs did not deploy because the Tornado GR1s were hard to maintain. They were there specifically to use PAVE SPIKE.
@IrisAviation91

Thanks very much, I totally agree. A Tornado was hit by a SAM in medium level attacks in a strike package with Buccaneers, however SEAD made it a lot easier for the coalition to use guided munition stores safely.

Friendly FYI. 226 OCU Sqn was based at RAF Lossiemouth and converted to 16 (R) Sqn in 1991. 16 Sqn moved to RAF Coltishall in the late 90s. The Jaguars took over the RAF commitment to Northern Iraq watch as they were equipped better for recon roles. The aircraft serviceability was one of the best in the RAF, that is why they rarely missed sorties. People thought the aircrew flew low out of RAF Coltishall on purpose, but it was because of the low efficiency of the wings and engines combined.

The Jaguar & Mirage F-1 entered service in the French air force in the same year & from the get-go the Mirage was the better aircraft of the 2, which is why I believe the French did not care about upgrading the Jaguar as they would rather spend the time & money expanding the capabilities for the Mirage F-1, which is a pure French design which they could market to the world.
