Keeping the engine bay cool will do wonders for reliability. Great underrated car. The car deserves a 5 speed manual. Make sure the fuel tank vent check valve by the charcoal canister is properly installed. It will cause all kinds of fuel tank pressure problems.

Thanks for sharing this. It takes some courage to attack the xjs and jaguar v12 mountains of bad reputation and turning these into simplified but awesome weapons of driving enjoyment, as you have. Now I want to do the same... Always loved the looks of the xjs and resented the easy criticisms of Clarkson etc... FYI, I'm working on tweaking my own Buick Riviera 1971 boat tail (455ci) here in France, also an interesting platform. Just ordered some dumpers (remote electric exhaust cutoffs) to enjoy the Big Block v8 rumble...

@MakeFix you're spot on! A lot of these bad reputation is simply caused by a lack of maintenance, as a lot of mechanics are afraid of working on the V12... Great engine and your understanding of it's components is amazing. I own a 1996 Jaguar XJ 6 daily driver for 14 years now and I have logged 300,000 miles on its AJ 16 engine, ZF tranny and differential. - all original. I do the work myself and I am determined to clock 500,000 miles before restoring the car. Yes, I am still with the original timing chain. I am still with the original ECU, modules , and all relays, so I want to see how long those components will last giving the fact that I drive the car every day and log 500 miles per month at a average yearly temp of 110 F. Drive the XJS daily too keep the engine healthy and you will have this classic for years to come. Great video.

I'm a young Californian, I'm dead obsessed with the Jaguar XJS, unfortunately our 5.3 HE was detuned to around 263hp, and being that I live in California, emissions are strict. This has resulted in me hunting for a 1993-1994 XJS with the 6.0 HE V12 (~304hp) which I have full intentions of swapping a TKO 600 6 speed into. Your videos are a genuine inspiration to me, as I've always wanted almost exactly what you have, but its far more difficult due to my state's emissions.

Jaguar sold less than 400 V12 manual cars world wide. I don't know if any made it to Canada. The straight six cars were originally manual only. The thing to do is take the five speed from the straight six and put it behind the V12. Simply Performance sells a kit for this.

Not sure if there is a dedicated V12 bellhousing out there ..anyway the SimplyPerformance way with an adapter plate and a a bolt on flywheel for your automatic flex plate works really well, and is really not that expensive. The gearbox itself can be found on a regular basis on Ebay for around 500-900 EUR. You should look for the decent Jaguar version. The BMW gearboxes have a different shaft, and therefore are using a different clutch plate. The connection to the propshaft is also different. Advantage of this setup is, that you're using 90 percent original Jaguar parts.... and if done probably everything looks like done in the factory.

Have you tried any fuel and oil modifiers? LiquiMoly Certatec or Archoil ? I found my V12 revs noticeably faster, with 2mpg gains on an engine with 270,000km. This is after routine steam and seafoam cleanings. Lower engine temps to as there is less friction with these products. Best case scenario is running ceratec in the oil, and some high octane gas mix with a combustion modifier (Archoil) and 3L of xylene paint thinner to really push the mixture to 99+ octane, the car loves it.

My 1990 V12 is backfiring. I rebuilt the fuel system including having the injectors cleaned. I think I have a electrical issue with the coils because the wires look like they are so brittle. I plan to rewire but I don't know where to get the plugs. I can see where the backfire occurs by looking in the cap. So I replaced the rotor. I also think that my AAV is sticking.

@Danny Helderdenkende Well I'm not a professional - this is my hobby ...beside this ... I haven't much experience with the later (XJ81) 6.0 engine ... but may I ask what kind of problem you're encounter with your car?!

Have you changed the rear diffrential? And if so, for what ratio? The 2:88 ratio seems long for the Getrag 265.
@v12gents

@Finlandese Yes! I've replaced it with a 3.54 diff which suits the Getrag really well!

Where did you get the larger throttle bodies?

@Albert Coldsnow I've found mine on eBay, made by AJ6 engineering. As far as I know, they're still in production. Currently Simply Performance has a pair up for sale on eBay UK as well.

Are you using Natural 95 benzin? I see you rev it over ca 6000rpm so just curious if you use standard or high octane fuel.
@v12gents

@zvoxjr Not sure where are you located, as the octane ratings differ a little bit around the world. However I'm using even 98 octane fuel, called "SuperPlus" here in Germany. That's also what Jaguar suggests in the manual (due to the 12,5:1 high compression)

@asdreww Thanks! Yes exactly! I've replaced my visco fan with an electrical one, made by SPAL and also upgraded the auxiliary fan... works really well so far and gives you a little bit more room in front of the engine...

@@v12gents excellent!!! Can you tell us how you control each of them? Do you have any delay switch to cool down the engine bay? Any main switch to overtake all the controls? Do you have notice any HP improvement ? Or driving improvement? I have a manual conversion as well, and I have pain in between gears at high rpm for my engine and it mecanical fan...

How is the miles per gallon or kilometers per liter
@v12gents
@Bus Driver T.E.D.D Well, I'm driving the car always with lots of enthusiasm on B-Roads ... under this circumstances...maybe around 18 Liter/100 Kilometer or 13 mpg ... probably a lot less on the highway ... can't give you numbers from the trip computer...haver replaced this with the analogue clock ...

How fast can your car go down the Autobahn?
@v12gents
@Matt Rooke I'll have to say, I've never tried this - top speed isn't really my aim. Anyway I pushed it one time to 200Km/h+ (125 MPH) 😉 What I can say you can travel easily with 170-180 KM/H (105-110 MPH) for hours and hours 🙂

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing petrol stations to only one state operated central gas station per city. From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. so beware of expensive cars today they will be forbidden and worthless tomorrow!!!! Beware of old smoke cars!!!!

Great work.. my son and I have also heavily modified the ER (engine room)..... With your mods, have you noticed any bad idle cycling,, up and down, no matter in gear or not.. cold or hot.. I'm a licensed mechanic, and worked on these for year's but cannot find this problem.. the lab scope looks good on injector times.. runs rich on the b bank.. and very rich at idle.. do you know or heard of this issue..
@v12gents

@Pete Halasz As you have the knowledge you've probably already checked the AAV aka auxiliary air valve?! How bad is the cycling ?! Just a little bit like maybe 50 rpm or really heavy ?! Over 1200 rpm with no throttle the fuel cut of chimes in, forcing the engine down in rpm ...and everything repeats... have you checked your timing ?! As far as I remember too much advance can also cause this. Have you checked the voltage range of your TPS (trottle position sensor)?! All this would be my starting points. Concerning the rich running - what year is your car ?! I have no deep knowledge about "Marelli cars" (after 1989), they are prone for some serious distributor issues (aka Marelli Fire) As you have checked your injectors with a scoop, do you have checked your rail fuel pressure as well?! Maybe you have a stuck (open) injector ?! Have you checked your VAC at the ECU in the trunk ?! A broken or clogged VAC line can also result in rich running. The coolant temperature sensor also comes to my mind ... So many possibilities :-) By the way, my IDLE is "OK" not super fine but ok! These cars were never known for a super "creamy" idle ;-) On idle my car is running rather lean with a CO of about 0,7 %

@@v12gents good afternoon, and thank you for the response.. You are absolutely right on all questions and concerns. My sons XJS is an 86 , so it has the Lucas with the GM module, also upgraded that with a pertronix 2000. A 60,000 volt coil.. TPS set twice and perfect,, check vacuum @ ecu, perfect but will verify exactly #... new injectors, port and polished intakes inside and out.. 70 mm throttle openings with custom snorkels, kN air filters,, fuel pressure around 30 psi with vacuum compensator,, idle jumps about 50 to 100 rpm max,, in or out of gear,, oscilloscope readings between A bank and B bank are not exactly the same but close (not happy)..timing checked and set at , I think 8 btdc.. what they ask at 3000 rpm.. no vacuum advance connected of course.. not sure if that is my favorite way of setting but I believe that's what manufacturers spec.. I would love to purchase Mobeck's complete MFI system.. I of course removed all the emission solenoids.. and it never came with any air pumps or pipes.. thank you for your time and suggestions, any help would be great..

@@petehalasz7547 Well, I see ...You've sorted out almost all relevant things. Is your AC working ?! I've read somewhere that the AC helps stabilizing the ILDE due to adding some load. The relevant question for me would be: How behaves the car on the street?! Any problems ?! How much annoys you the unstable idle ?! I'm normally as you... trying to be perfect... but sometimes I force myself to give up and relax. YES Mobeck's kit would be awesome, but at the moment I'm not ready for this investment yet ;-)
