It's true that the city felt empty, but for a 2003 game, having side missions et being able to fight to death against the 'police' was enough for most people. When I was a kid, i would fight against them to get ammo between missions (until i discovered that there are unlimited ammo at the gun practice place). As for the difficulty, I just think that people nowadays are not prepared for this kind of game. Back then, you didn't have tutorials for eveything. Nowadays, you have a tutorial for everything, even how to collect a plant by pressing a button. Jak 2, like most games of the early 2000's, didn't have that kind of help. When someone tries to play it, they get frustrated, because they don't expect that they will have to learn how to play by themselves. For example, the guns, or at least the red and yellow ones, aren't made to shoot from afar. You need to use them while doing melee attacks. It can combo. The game doesn't teach you that though. The jetboard is an amazing element of the game. You can go very fast with it if you chain spins. I don't think the game will ever explain it either. I don't think the game is too difficult. If I was able to beat the game at 8 years old and had friends who did the same, I don't think the problem comes from the game. Honeslty, saying that the game is too hard to be played is pretty much like the people who asked elden ring (or any souls game) for an easy mode, because they can't beat it. It's just wrong in my opinion. I hope you will replay this game one day with the knowledge you already have and with a mindset that better suits the game, because it is really amazing.

Super well put my friend! I appreciate all of this, and I agree with it all as well actually. I’m definitely in team ‘no easy mode’ and the game should be played as the devs intended for it too in that soulsborne conversation. I also really do think mindset going into a game is important for stuff like that, first time I played dark souls I tried to brute force it, kept losing and put it down cause I didn’t understand it. Going back a few years later though, things just clicked and I love it now. The thing I keep coming back to with games like Jak 2 though are exactly like you said, when the game came out, this was the norm. You weren’t hand held and if you couldn’t get passed it, that was a you problem, not the game (just look at something like Driver as an infamous example). But if you’re like me and you never played it before this year, but you are used to all these other modern games those things just don’t translate as well in 2022. I totally get what it’s going for, but I think for the average gamer picking it up now with no nostalgia I think this one has a far more barriers to push through then TPL or Jak 3. The thing that hurts it most now is the lack of experience around the game. I’ve been playing through R&C for the channel and got to go back to the physical ps2 boxes, and reading the manuals in it tells you about the game, characters, controls, weapons, etc. and I’m guessing Jak 2 was very similar to give this extra context. Not to mention when you are at school talking to all your other friends about tips and tricks when it’s a topical game is always amazing, but just not an option now. Fortunately comments like yours help give that context so I definitely do want to revisit it at some point down the track, this game is going to stay special too me now, even just as the first video I did that had some minor success. Really appreciate your comment and time, and for not just dragging me for being bad or not understanding! Hope you can check out the rest of the channel too 😊

I don't think the city was empty. It's just you have to look at it like a sandbox type of game like gta. It's not a rpg..although it has small rpg elements..so don't expect multiple npcs with sidequests and dialogue. Although it still has more than enough content and characters to interest you. I also agree it's not TOO difficult even as a young child..which i was like maybe 10-14 when i beat it. The hardest missions was the sewer levels with the escort, any escort missions really, the timed missions, the races, the bomb missions, the last stage kind of and some of the side missions. This is still my favorite jak game even though 3 improved on alot. What i liked most with this and games in this era, the developers matured with us so that explains the no hand holding. Which i appreciate because it prepared me for games like Dark souls, Ghost runner, Nioh, Onimusha,Megaman zero etc. Just alot of hardcore games .

I respectfully disagree. Good things: -Story yes. (The only reason I went through to the end) -That's it. Bad things: -Bad checkpoints or none existent in most missions. -Frustrating vehicle controls. Like you drunk or something, the same people who made crash team racing wtf!!! -Barren world hub. -Bad gameplay mechanics, FFS no aiming? No strafing? No lock on? The F outta here. -Stupid boring timed missions in the hub world, are you kidding me? -Stupid escort missions in the hub world, are you kidding me? -Missions were enemies shoot you without and window to breathe and see what's happening, it's all trial and error until you are lucky to get through, are you kidding me? -Worst camera in a videogame for what it's trying to do with the heavy combat. And I can still go on and on with the list with all the BS I in this game, so don't come with this "more strengths than weaknesses", this game is clearly a pile of hot garbage, no way to save it, sadly not even the story. Oh and the only reward after finishing is to never ever having to play it again. Worst game I've ever played in my entire life and I've played a lot of shitty games that at least are sorta fun.

I didn't think it was difficult when i first got it on the ps2, but that was because I caught onto the difficulty gimmick pretty early on. The game has very short easy levels, and makes it difficult by throwing an unmanageable number of enemies at you. Because the levels are so short, you often don't get any checkpoints, so you get frustrated by having to restart the mission.
@stephaniegalliart859

It took me a month for my 12-year-old self to beat this game when it first came out. I think a lot of the difficulty was from this being a very experimental game in the early days, long before formal game and level design and theory was the gold standard across studios. Levels that were in the early game had difficulty that would have been better placed towards the end of the game, due to the amount of new gameplay elements thrown at the player, changing camera focal lengths that throw off depth perception, stuff like that. As for the guns: I don't think the devs made it clear that the guns were supposed to compliment your melee abilities, and not replace them. The game plays like ass if you rely completely on guns. But it plays like butter if you rely on melee and dynamic mobility first, and only occasionally use guns to complement your fluid mobility and melee ability.
@HowGoodGames

Yeah I think you're on the money there. Every great studio has these games in their catalogue, and I don't mean 'bad' games because thats totally subjective, but games where they look back on and say 'next time, im going to do that differently'. Even Jak 3 is a great example of that, people say its too easy, but I think that comes from things being balanced better imo. I think one day ill definitely have to go back and play it again with that in mind, i've seen lots of chat around it and would be interested to see if it changes my opinion on the game

The game came out in 2003 so I was around 6 when I got my hands on it for the first time. I'd play on it off and on for years, mostly dicking around the city until I got too scared to continue which was usually the "kill metal heads in forest" mission that Sig gave us. I don't know what it was, but the mission freaked me out. Then I'd start a new game, rinse and repeat. I finally had the balls to beat it when I was 9. This was one weeklong playthough, playing every day after school. I had beaten *every* other Jak game before I beat Jak II. Yes, it was that hard back then as well. I recently did another playthrough last year and I tried my absolute hardest to beat the game without cheesing it via spin-jumpshots.

It took me and my dad ages to beat this as we got stuck on the mission where you escort the bombers through the sewers. Just not enough health or ammo and if you died or any of the guys you're escorting got killed that was it, and their damage was permanent too (fuck the ambush part at the end of that mission). It was frustrating and if patches existed like they do today all they'd have to do is add like thirty seconds onto the end of the timed missions, give more ammo, check points and health packs, and I think this game would be way WAY better. The game wasn't that difficult it was just really unfair and frustrating for no reason sometimes and I just don't think Naughty Dog really thought out or tested a lot of what they made. It makes you really appreciate that games can be patched post-release now.

You should play Jak 3, it improves on a lot of these problems. The world is more open and colourful, there are more collectables hiding in crates, more platforming, more checkpoints, and the tone is lighter. Daxter is especially good when it comes to collectables. As for this game though, I didn't mind the tone shift, I thought it was kinda interesting at first, but then they started introducing all the different kinds of gameplay, and that's what ruined it. There were also too many characters, I miss when it was just Jak, Daxter, Samos and Keira.

Like early GTA cities, Haven is merely a backdrop for the story and missions. Despite the emptiness, the city remains iconic because it represents the whole story. The NPCs look depressed, the colours are muted, militarised police everywhere, and the imposing palace is always visible. It does its job very well imo to position the Baron as a ‘villain’. The other issues you had like aiming… yeah the gun system is very unique. I love it because I know it so well. I agree with basically every point you make in this video, I really loved Jak 1, made me feel like I was playing the 5th crash bandicoot game that naughty dog never made. But Jak 2 is really a product of its time unfortunately, in the early 2000s where everything had to be edgy a obscure, the opposite of what Jak 1 was. Many parts of the game (especially when you go get the green gem) made me think of what a Jak 2 game more like its predecessor would have been like and what a waste of potential has been done by naughty dog at the time, just for the sake of following the trend of the era. At the moment I haven't played Jak 3 yet, but I hope it's better than its predecessor.

This was a hard game but worth it for all the varieties of game play in one game. I miss games like this where you have to master multiple skills, keeping them honed and even improving as you go. I like that every time I think "well I've finally mastered that damned skill" they find a way to make it challenging again. If sometimes too challenging. I stopped gaming when I stopped being able to find games like this and Kya: Dark Lineage and Prince of Persia, and ICO.

So I jumped into Jak II right after beating Jak & Daxter. I almost cried after dying so many times in the Water Slums Ambush, and then I put the game down for over a year and a half when I got to the invisible Metal Heads mission. I finally beat it a couple of weeks ago, then I beat it again (where it felt easier the second time), but that first experience just burned me. I still don’t like Jak II.

I actually started my Jak series playthrough back in 2020. I gave up on the 1st game because I found it boring and tedious. And this year I came back to the game and, wow what was I thinking. Jak 1 is fantastic. Soon after I went to Jak 2 and my reaction was very similar to yours. I didn't have much interest in the game because of its edgy vibes, GTA style world and how different the Jak 1 and 2 were. I ended up loving it in the end. (Even though I wanted to die at many points in the game). I went after to beating Jak 3 and Jak X and I can definitively say that the Jak series is underrated because of more popular characters like Ratchet and Clank or Banjo-Kazooie. I suggest playing the games, they are some of the most fun I've had in a game since Crash 3 Warped on PS1.

And we were stuck in the mission where you need to destroy a cargo ship on the drill platform. We werent able to kill 40 flying soldiers T_T Few years later parents bought me my own PS2 and i played through Jak 3 and Jak 2 quite easly. Okay here's how to kill effectively in these games: shoot after you land a kick/punch, or in the middle of your roll/longjump. I found out 9 years ago that it's more or less built like an action brawler. The bridge escape segment which I died at 200 time as a kid was made easier when I learned to get aggressive with my melee and shoot combos. Shooting an enemy right after a melee loads off three quick blaster shots, enough to kill anything. Yeah it requires liberal ammo usage but you'll see targets drop that way.
@HowGoodGames

Yeah this is definitely how I’ll tackle it next time. The craziest thing is that in the notoriously hard slums section, I actually got out of their first go just running and firing and using no moves or combos. But then I found other areas super difficult instead

The game wasn't that difficult when I played it as a teen. Basically from the videos I've seen online, I don't see people taking advantage of Jak's arsenal a lot. Basically there are different ways to navigate each level. I generally used some sense in gun selection per mission. Another thing that's important in the game is maintaining optimal space. The hard mission in the game is without a doubt, the mission where I have to survive the guards in the area with the bridges and water. I used the vulcan gun for that mission, it somewhat helps with spacing.

Jak 2 is hard, but on my very, VERY recent playthrough of it i realized that the gameplay and fights are easier when combining jak 1 move set with the guns in jak 2. No i'm not talking about jump spin/ blaster combo. but when i was doing the seal piece mission again. i would actually use the scatter gun and kick then fire to push them away. the 4 guns (except maybe peacmaker) has very great synergy with his move set all with unique situations that i deliberately tried on my run through to use. and i had a much more enjoyable time

Exactly what you have just said there is why Im excited to jump back into this game in the future. A lot of the issues I had with it were essentially an extension of what I considered frustrating guns, which is what they were when you used them the way I did. Comboing everything together though seems like it would change a lot of it, maybe even mean dying less, getting frustrated at checkpoints less, etc. so excited to see what my experience is like with that in mind!

I was only 5 or 6 when I was introduced to Jak and Daxter and I absolutely loved it. It wasn't until I was 7 that I actually beat the game. Before, I was just messing around. **Side Note**: I literally just finished it on PC with a native port that was released about a month ago, all powercells, precursor orbs, scout flies etc (Huge accomplishment lmao). It runs amazingly and I played it in 4k (Waaaay better than the PCSX2 Emulator). A quick KZitem search will give you exactly what you need if you're interested. I can literally remember the level of shock and excitement I felt on the first cut scene of Jak II. I was as equally pissed, being 7yrs old, that saving Jak from dark eco was all in vein because now he wants to be a bad ass and embrace it lmao! Over time, the game drew me in more and more. I remember spending countless hours trying to beat this game. I thought it was just me! It may not be that difficult for me now, but I remember the mission where you had to go to the bar outside of the city by the water and meet this super fat floating guy, and RACE your way back somewhere...I can't remember where but it was hard asf!!!! I do have to respectfully disagree with a good amount of the points you made here, but I do understand where you’re coming from in some cases. I do think that the guns could’ve used a better mid to long range aiming option, since even in the first Jak game you could us goggles to aim blasts of yellow eco, and honestly some more colorful environments would have been nice as well. However, other than that I love everything about the game, even it’s absurdly frustrating escort missions. I may be a bit nostalgia blind, since it was technically my first real video game back when I was six years old, but I’ve replayed the game three times since then at different stages of my life and found myself never getting tired of it. The missions to me don’t feel repetitive, in part because the story context around all of them changes, and they all feel important to the main story. The tonal change and Dark Jak mechanic really plays to my personal tastes more, as someone who loves games like God of War or Devil May Cry. The guns feel really nice to use at close range in tandem with melee combat, and the Jetboard reminds me of what it was like to actually learn how to skateboard - ridiculously frustrating and unsatisfying at first, but really smooth and liberating once I got good enough at the basics to try out the tricks. Even the vehicles appealed to me since their physics accurately reflected what it would be like to pilot a hovering car with no friction to rely on, though the racing missions do haunt my nightmares… Honestly, I could talk about this game and what I love about it all day. However, I do respect the points you’ve made, and I recognize my own nostalgia may blind me to the game’s flaws. Still, I hope you’re able to come back to this game some time and enjoy it the same way I have. Jak as a series is still one of my personal favorites, even years after it was released, and I think all three of the main games have something great to offer (we don’t talk about Lost Frontier…)
@HowGoodGames

Can I just say, thank you for being so respectful and leaving such a great comment! I think after reading your thoughts and others like it, I definitely want to go back to it in another year or so after the dust has settled and look at it through this other lens. Even after seeing so many different views on it though, I still stand by my points as a first time player because for me it highlights how difficult it can be going back to older games. A big part of it being the lack of an active community and support, which really translates to 'you can't talk about this with your friends at school and digital robs you of a game manual'. Both of these things I think are so important to these types of PS2 era games and enhance that experience. Playing it today, it felt almost isolating coming up against some of these difficulty spikes and struggling to get past them. Granted, it only took 3 or so days to beat it, I was genuinely thinking am I missing something or am I just crazy and don't enjoy this game. Im glad that it is more the former than the latter, and I sincerly loved 1 and 3, since 3 felt like a refinement of all the new ideas in 2 but executed to a higher standard with everything except for the story. Definitely been convinced to go back to Jak 2 though now that I can look back on it with some nostalgia and tips and see how the experience goes. Thanks again for taking the time to comment and hope to see you back in another video!

I'm playing through the game currently and I agree with all your points. I think pacing definitely suffers with the story and the way missions are done, at least at the start - lots of (what's going on)(go do this mission, maybe it will help me)(ok are you going to tell me what's going on yet)(no we're not going to talk about it at all, go do this mission). That being said, I am really enjoying myself playing it. I keep trying to indulge myself in the hub world.... but there really isn't much there and I'm willing to accept it now that you mention it. Jak and Daxter's strengths were that every place you visited had so much character and mystique about it, something that's very much lost on this game (without all the precursors and sage stuff). Really looking forward to finishing my playthrough. I'm on the hoverboard bomb throwing mission and I gotta say... Definitely in competition for worst missions in the game - as most hoverboard missions have been for me so far.

The checkpoints can be really unforgiving, but I feel like the controls are so tight and responsive and the resources/tools the game gives you to tackle it’s objectives are good enough that I never feel like a death wasn’t simply my fault… again, except for the Water Slums mission, but hey, that’s what the dark bomb glitch is for lol

The reason why I took an edgy turn was because it was in the era back then where Grand theft Auto and a lot of other edgy games were on the rise so it was either get with the groove or find something else to keep up with them.

I think it's funny, now that I'm older I think the game's not that hard, it just has brutal checkpoints, but I recently started playing with a friend of mine who never played it, and he struggles pretty hard, since the mechanics aren't burned into his muscle memory 😂

I only got about 40-50% complete when playing this as a child however I still loved it. I’m going through a new playthrough now on ps3 and I’m 75% done going strong
