@@tonyferrit8761 He was never going to take off. This was the first time Jake had taxied a Lightning in over 30 years and he didn't miss a beat. I remember seeing Lightning XS933 at RAF Leuchars Airshow in 1983, it made a low fast run and when it got in front of us it stuck it's nose skywards and disappeared into the high clouds in a few seconds leaving nothing but the crackling air from it's afterburners, awesome 👍👍During the same show a Vulcan which had been on the Falklands raid did the most amazing display.

The only job I ever wanted was to fly the frightening, I have never recovered from the day I was told at RAF Biggin Hill in 1967 that they didn't want me. And 54 years later I think the Lightening really was the ultimate pilots aeroplane, like a 1300mph Spitfire, complete with cannon. I watched two of them dog fighting BELOW 500 ft SW of Bridlington! It must have been one of their last flights, I felt enormously lucky to have witnessed it

By far the best British jet interceptor. Just sheer speed and manoeuvrability. Even the Tornado couldn’t match it . Such a shame politics got in the way of having her updated.
@Spacegoat92

It's not politics, its the fact that the capabilities of the enemy and the scope of warfare was changing. You couldn't mount a radar in the nose cone, and a engine inlet on the nose wasn't as effective or efficient as dual air intakes. This is just the way it goes.

Like Sweden the UK should add the two Bruntingthorpe Lightnings to the Battle of Britain memorial flight and operate one (alternating between the two every few years) in perpetuity with BAE and RR providing the engineering support at tax payer expense with private partnership (without tacky logos on the aircraft). The British people need to be reminded that engineering, science and manufacturing are at the core of what it means to be British (former Chancellor Phillip Hammond take note!).

No, the CAA class the Lightning as "Military Complex with reheat" so there is no chance they would be able to fly again. The airframes are all virtually out of hours and the OEM's, which you would need full support from, would never come onboard.
