Not only that, but Paul himself says similar stuff in Romans 6. "Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! You died to sin; how can you live in it any longer?" It's quite clear there that Paul thinks you will not intentionally sin, i.e. disobey the law, if you are truly saved by your faith. (cont)

James is one of my favorite book of the apostles. It is very plain & clear as to how we should live our lives in the light of what Jesus has done for us. It's sad regarding the controversy surrounding works & faith as, I feel, shouldn't dominate the discussion. The 1st chapter of James is very rich with directions in how we should approach suffering & hardship in life. "Consider it pure joy." Quite a contradictory teaching & almost sounds like it came straight from the lips of Jesus.

@FnordPerfect: You didn't know about the book of James yet you know what the apocrypha is? :) I don't know if we'll do them or not... I'd really like to, but we may run out or time and resources... The priority is doing the standard 66 books first, then we'll see how we're placed?

@usafwings09 Yes, thanks for clarifying. I was trying to hit on works and how the two people contextually addressed them, but Grace obviously shouldn't be overlooked.

Romans and James do not really dissagree. Both talk about faith, James only elaborates and points out that if you have faith, you will also do what God wants and that means you will act on your faith. I can see why Luther would say its an epistle of straw because it might confuse people into believing salvation comes through works, but really what is happening is the good works come out of and from salvation through faith.

3:17 I'd say that GALATIANS is the most influential letter..It is single handedly the "freedom" letter to the church. It is the Declaration of Independence so to speak..of all Christianity. Romans was the calmer more thought out methodical letter. Galatians contains within it the fire in the belly speech..that comes from the soul of a man who has just been set free by God. You can not be an inteligent person in this world without understanding Galatians.

There is no controversy between James and Paul. Paul never says salvation is not by works. Paul says justification is not by works. But Paul says "righteousness leads to salvation" and "godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation". But after justification comes sanctification and then perfection.

James is referring to works that come as a result of salvation. Works are NOT required for salvation. If someone fully turns their life over to Jesus in faith, works will come. How these works manifest themselves from person to person differs, but the works will line up with the Bible. When Paul refers to works, he is referring to the idea of justification by works, which was popular in Judaism. Allow me to illustrate: Paul: Works->Salvation James: Faith -> Salvation -> Works

More specifically, Paul is talking about outward deeds (Works) that can be displayed to other men, and can be seen as a form of self piety. Example: "Look at me, I'm circumcised, God must love me!" True works of the Law are done in faith, out of true love for neighbor, without expectation for Worldly reward. See Romans 3.31, 13.8-10; Matthew 5,6.

I don't see a contradiction between Paul & James either. We are saved by faith alone in Christ, just as Paul said. Once we're saved, the Holy Spirit works in us to make us want to do good things and not sin. Obviously, everyone makes mistakes even after salvation, such as sinning or ignoring chances to do good works. Even Paul said that he did that which he knew was wrong. Once we are saved, we are sealed, so even if we fall off the wagon, Christ will not forget us.

Scripturally there is NO debate on this subject at all.. The problem is not many people take the time to read scripture and see the evidence on this. John 7..Acts 2..Acts 15..Acts 21..Galatians 1..James 2.. James 4..Heb 11..Romans 4 ..Luke 18..Joshua 6..Gen 15.. Gen 22..1 Tim 5..and others ..You have to know your scriptures in order to sift through all this..to then come to the conclusion based ON scripture ( not feelings )..that James..was wrong to say what he did.

There are works, and "works of faith". works are done when our motives are not pure, such as an expectation of gain from others, as well as God. "Works of faith" on the other hand can be understood from a reading of Matthew 6. If we do good deeds by faith, then and only then are our motives pure and we can please our Father in heaven. There is nothing wrong with doing good deed in front of onlookers, but it may taint our motives, and detract from any treasures we might have gained in heaven.

It is amazing that even in such an academic environment these scholars do not even give a nob to Catholic theologians that state that the works that Paul refers to are actions insisted by the law to show holiness i.e. circumcision, cleanliness, unclean food etc. Those are works of the law which become impediments to salvation.

Romans 3.31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law. Romans 13.8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. 9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. See Mat 5 for Law

(cont) I do think Paul misinterpreted what James said, however. And James was originally on the side of circumcision, so I understand why he was against him. But what is actually in the book of James is not contradictory. In fact, James did his best to make it not contradictory, acknowledging that we were saved by faith. He just said that true faith meant you'd bear the fruit of good works. Kinda like how Paul talked about his "fruit of the spirit."

Augustine (first significant latin writer) made some claims which were heretical and Luther made criticisms of the Latin speaking Roman Church, understandibly so. Meanwhile, the Greek speaking Jewish and Gentile 'eastern' Christians that most of the new testament was addressed to, and which the Apostles were raised from, kept the original teaching steadfast and still do. Yet, western 'theologians' rate Augustine and Luther's writing as more significant? This is the sad result of having western

James just reinforce the teachings of Christ, and Romans just says you need Christ to get into Heaven. James is telling us to be a faithful Christian you must have the fruits of the Spirit coming from you.

Notice they always stop at that verse and do not continue on to find out what FAITH meant to James..James 2:18 and 19 are critical to understaning that James' idea of what FAITH is..was in error. James thought that BELIEF and FAITH were synonyms..and he used them in that context when in fact FAITH is not the same as BELIEF. The Demons do NOT have FAITH in God all they have is BELIEF. Belief that God exists is not FAITH in God. Thus James was in error scriptually to say what he did.

James proved that HE had as much ubderstanding of the meaning of the Greek word PISTEO..as many Christians today have...zero..! The Demons do not place their FAITH in God they REBELLED against God and still rebel against him. Not so with Christians..we place our FAITH in God..which is much much more than just "believe that God exists"..! See the difference..?

It is straw..not grains in it..! Just match the first 10 verses of Galatians 1 with the first 10 verses of James and see who was preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. James was the "Benny Hinn/Joel Osteen of his day..He was a real jerk..!

James the "supposed" brother of Jesus..( an indepth study of the use of the word ADELPHOS in NT scripture is needed to understand why James was wrongly called Jesus' brother )..was or leaned towards being an Essene..or a Pharisee supporter..if not a Pharisee himself..to be polite..James according to scripture..had "Pharisitical tendencies".

4:00 The woman speaking has no clue to what James said at all..which BTW is the current state of most of Christianity today..When James said James 2:19..he showed right there that he had no understanding whatsoever of what FAITH is to God. James then goes on to MISQUOTE the Genesis account of Abraham..that Paul rightly quotes in Gal 3:6 and Rom 4.

James is not an easy letter or book to read. Right from the go the author can not be identified. Which James wrote it? No wonder some people called it the piece of straw. It's from the misunderstanding of the book. The other issue faith without works being dead in contradiction to what Paul wrote in Romans. Due to that fact it is not one of my favourite book in the bible.
