Another great John Barry score is the theme from The Black Hole (composed around nearly the same time, too!) Both are very "spacey" particularly The Black Hole composition - I think it's brilliant! He was an absolutely brilliant composer!

Fabulous Bond movie despite being roundly hammered by the professional critics. Perhaps they'd all become jaded with the formula because Moonraker is perhaps the quintessential Roger Moore Bond movie. It has so much packed into it, so many memorable scenes, and as far as I know, is the only Bond movie to bring in a baddie from a previous film - Jaws - and who didn't appreciate that? Moreover, what a reintroduction - surprising Bond from behind to shove him out of an aeroplane without a parachute! Maybe, at 11 years of age, I was at the perfect age to see this scene - old enough to appreciate the lethal situation but too young to spoil it for myself by thinking that 'Bond never dies so he'll survive'; I was truly gobsmacked and certainly had never seen anything like the skydiving stunts that followed. I don't know why this scene wasn't widely discussed as some kind of sensation because as far as I know this was the first time anyone had seen a scene like it. Definitely the greatest Bond opening ever to my mind; and as if that wasn't enough, I got to experience another heart-stopper when Bond was in the centrifuge. Too young to think of the wrist gun myself, I really thought Bond was a goner! Moreover, what a scene in terms of realism. We really do get to see Roger Moore's face rippling with the centrifugal force. This scene is another reason why Moonraker should be rated more highly: Bond is famous for coming out of his scrapes calm and unshaken yet in this scene he can barely stand (yet pushes away the help Holly Goodhead attempts to give him) and the cabin he emerges from is steaming! Then there's the simply sensational scene in Rio, at night, when Manuela sees Jaws, disguised as a clown, approaching her down the alley. It sends shivers down my spine every time I see it. Finally, there's the theme song, to my ear, the best singing performance Shirley Bassey ever gave in a piece of wonderfully romantic music. Thank you for posting!

2:43 - Favorite Part of the whole soundtrack. It fits the scene it's placed in...Bond enters the area where all the beautiful women await, he's in paradise, then BOOM! into the pond with the killer python! But with one flick of the wrist, snake takes a dart, and dies. Jaws pulls bond from the pond, and Drax asks "Why did you kill my pet python?" to which bond says "I discovered he had a crush on me."

Except it wasn't, and wouldn't have been, a python! It would have been an anaconda, and looked like an anaconda; and they *do* swim and have been known to kill humans. So this was a bit of dodgy dialogue, sadly. I love the film yet, while it played superbly to me first time I watched it, repeated viewings reveal a lot of weak bits. Still, it has perhaps the loveliest Bond woman of them all (and that's saying something!) in Lois Chiles. Her face in her last shot is just angelic.

Growing up watching James Bond with my dad, I always preferred this movie out of all the JB films. Its a movie that has a plot that is easy to understand, the hero and the heroine are both strong, independent, and have a great chemistry that's unique from other relationships with Bond Girls, and then there's the wonderful, magical music. Its classy, charming, with its witty and humorous moments, and great scenery as you travel the world. It has all the elements that James Bond should have. Beautiful escapism. For me, no other 007 film can compare to it.

Man, I always loved both Moonraker and Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Moonraker along with Star Trek: The Motion Picture are both the most underappreciated sci-fi films of all time, they are both way much better sci-fi films than any Star Wars film made after 1983's Return of the Jedi, and Star Wars as a Franchise was never the same when Richard Marquand ended the Star Wars adventures of Luke, Leia, and Han Solo in 1983. Moonraker is a very underrated and awesome bond film, it is my all time favorite Roger Moore bond film, and Moonraker had great performances from Roger Moore, Michael Lonsdale, and Lois Chiles. Moonraker had a superb John Barry music score, the boat chase scene with Jaws in the Amazon River was brilliant, and Moonraker as well as Star Trek: The Motion Picture are both one of my absolute favorite films of 1979. I also really like Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Star Trek: The Motion Picture was a very impressive Star Trek film, it had great stuff like Leonard Nimoy's performance as Spock and the Jerry Goldsmith music score, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture had good plot of the Enterprise crew investigating V'Ger. Overall, I will always have a soft spot for Moonraker and Star Trek: The Motion Picture from 1979 and I can't believe that Moonraker and Star Trek: The Motion Picture are both 45 years old now in 2024.

Moonraker along with The Black Hole and Star Trek: The Motion Picture are the most underappreciated sci-fi films of all time, they are all way more better sci-fi films than any Star Wars film made after 1980, and Moonraker as well as The Black Hole and Star Trek: The Motion Picture are all great cult classic sci-fi films from 1979. Moonraker is a very underrated and awesome Roger Moore bond film, this film just like The Black Hole both had excellent music scores by John Barry, and Michael Lonsdale as Hugo Drax along with Richard Kiel as Jaws were both great bond villains. I also love both The Black Hole and Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The Black Hole is a very good and brilliant sci-fi Disney film, The Black Hole had amazing characters like Dr. Hans Reinhardt, Maximilian, and V.I.N.CENT, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture was a pretty good start to the Star Trek Film Series. Overall, I always liked Moonraker, The Black Hole, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture and I would watch Moonraker, The Black Hole, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture from 1979 over any post 1980 Star Wars film all day anyday.

davebrucelee2011 Although the music score for ''Moonraker'' has some beautiful pieces of music, the overall music score is far from John Barry's best Bond film music scores which are ''DAF'', ''YOLT'' and ''OHMSS''. ''DAF''', ''YOLT'' and ''OHMSS'' are Barry's 3 masterpiece Bond film music scores and ''FRWL'', ''Goldfinger'' and ''Thunderball'' are excellent music scores. The sad but understandable reality is that Barry's creative well began to run dry as far as the Bond films are concerned starting with the basically forgettable music score for ''TMWTGG''. The music score for ''Moonraker is a good, workmanlike music score, but it it is nowhere near the level of Barry's three masterpiece Bond film music scores or even at the same level as his three excellent Bond film music scores. Barry was a brilliant music composer, one of the greatest film music composers in history, but even a brilliant music composer eventually runs out of fresh ideas for music for a particular genre of film after scoring numerous films in that genre. It is wonderful that Barry left the Bond film series with one last great musical moment when he and Chrissie Hynde co-wrote the absolutely beautiful song ''If there Was A Man'' for the Bond film ''The Living Daylights'' which should have been that film's main title song rather than the lousy song ''The Living Daylights'' by the music group Aha.

I like Bond films where the clichés are toned-down. This score ticks that box for me. Twangy guitars and parpy horns are replaced by bowed double bass, celestial choirs and majestic brass. It fits in with the cigars replacing cigarettes, bourbon replacing vodka martini, Lotus replacing Aston Martin of the Roger Moore era. Love it!! Rules are made to be broken

But not to be deviated from completely. Those so-called “clichés” are integral to Bond’s musical identity and what makes the scores sound so exciting. The word “cliché” refers to something that has been overused to the point that it has lost all meaning, and that’s just not the case here. The guitars and horns continue to effortlessly convey the dangerous air of 007.
