here's my theory as to why his launch kept getting dragged 1) james's victims coming out with their stories: he chose not to launch 2) no one wanting to work with him which is why there was so much 'search time' for labs 3) the crossover with halsey's brand 'about face.' conceptually, his brand seems quite similar expect halsey has a better reputation, better art skills (i'd say this is subjective but then again not everyone can get their portfolio accepted to top art schools), and a clearer vision of what her brand should be all in all, his launch reminds me too much of her's except the about face's paints have a much more unique color palette imo. lazy marketing, cheap packaging, cash-grabby af.
@katrinahjelmgren1729
Жыл бұрын
What really makes me sad about all this is that his "paint idea" isn't original and has already been done in a FAR better way. Halsey (who I love) is literally a painter alongside her singing career and created her makeup brand About-Face specifically as a brand that could appeal to artists and could be used like art supplies. The packaging is sleek and (unless I'm mistaken) specifically made to be easier to use especially for people who do art and want to make their makeup more artistic. Like she literally encourages people to use their fingers and go crazy which I think is really cool, and now we've got James over here making a WAAAAAAYYYYY over priced knockoff version of it which like I already said, makes me really really sad.
@Jemma29

THIS. I've been thinking about this since I saw the concept in another video someone did about his makeup launch. Like the other commenter said people will dupe but it still bugs me because I hadn't seen anything like Halsey's idea before (I could just not know and there could have been others who have done it before) so I liked her concept. James has never been original with his makeup so I'm not surprised but it is frustrating to see. It's also one thing to make a more affordable dupe like Elf or Nyx does to luxury brands and it's another to try to make it seem like your idea is original, which I get that impression from James, and not make it any more affordable. I wouldn't say Halsey's makeup is insanely priced but I can see some people not being able to swing it. Sorry for ranting. ❤ ETA: I was incorrect about the cost of the makeup. It appears to be somewhat cheaper but I still don't support it.

I completely agree with the oversaturated makeup brand market. There are few brands that go above on beyond and that’s why they are well known like fenty and rare beauty. James is about 2 yrs too late and I think begging for people to uncancel him which was clearly an attempt to get in the publics good graces for monetary reasons since he has his makeup brand was the worst pr move since the ukulele incident which wasn’t that much longer afterwards but the people who are canceled now peaked 5 yrs ago. To continue with using Jeffree Star as a counter example - I'll be frank, back in 2018 when I didn't know who he was, but started getting into lipsticks and saw his heavily promoted, his branding and the design of his packaging was very eye catching and appealing. It's hard to compare the custom components Jeffree has now to what James is releasing - Jeffree started out with white labelled components too and only started creating the elaborate components as the company grew. You can tell what products are older based on their components: the velour liquid lips, the first product JSC released, are a standard, white labelled component. I literally have a Dose of Colours lipstick that uses the exact same component. But when he first created the brand, he made sure that the packaging stood out - the bright pink topper with the JSC logo is very iconic and eye catching, even with a standard component. You recognize JSC lipsticks in someone's collection immediately - they're very distinct. In comparison, James's packaging is just a white tube with the logo and a pill shape colour label. You can probably throw it in a drawer with some acrylic paints and you wouldn't know it shouldn't be there. It's funny, because I was looking for a similar product while discussing the release with a friend yesterday and I found a company that uses the same component, but the packaging was coloured to match the product and it made it pop so much more. AlsoTheirProductWasSoMuchCheaperCoughCough. In regards to the campaign featuring none of the people he said he was looking for in the casting call, to give him the benefit of the doubt, James Charles is so irrelevant now that I don't think there were any grandmas who applied lol. But if he really only picked people who had a following of some kind, then, yeah, sounds sketchy.

as a graphic designer, even going for a minimalistic design, there is time put into designing those labels, packaging, etc. it all has to fit the style, so font choice, color (or lack of it) is scrutinized, especially marketing a product like paints or makeup. there are elements like shapes or lines used throughout different product packaging to unify all products. james’s packaging looks like dollar store finger paints because whoever designed his packaging didn’t think about elements of design or research minimalistic packaging (which is very trendy right now, how can you do that wrong? lol)

I say this as a retired MUA with almost 40 years of using makeup both professionally and for fun... Who are these even for!? Back when I even did makeup for independent films I used kryolan. Sorry but it's been a staple since 1945. For anyone truly serious who wants a paint type product, that's the one I've stood by for decades. 🤷🏼♀️

I wish more brands would release colored makeup especially in pastel colors or glitter Or really intense highlighter that I just used on my eyes and weird ways and over So it looks holographic Holographic trend last of like 1 year and it didn't really scratch the surface I really love multifaceted powders that change color when you Move a certain way Or in the sunlight I have the special powder that I put over blue eye shadow and it's like a peachy orange in the shade and then it's like a green gold in the sunlight it is so cool

I’ll be honest, as an artist myself, I actually love this concept and would definitely buy it if it weren’t James Charles’s brand. I find the paint tubes and bright shades really fun and reminiscent of my other art supplies. If he had been less of an egregious creator I might have purchased them.

If I were a beauty guru I’d do a palette of every color you need and then a magnetic pallete so you can take out whichever ones you need/ want to travel w

One thing that is killing sales is the fact that we just went through a major period of inflation. In my household or solid middle class but suddenly we have no spending like our spending dollar is gone and it isn't because we've been throwing money out the window or buying things we don't need it's because inflation has made everything so much more expensive that a higher percentage of our pay goes towards the essentials like food and roof and such

I got as far as the thumbnail and my only thought, as I collected my jaw off the floor, was “that makeup job is terrible! Who spat that shit all over his face like that?” But I’m of the Lauren Hutton-Lauren Bacall old school, so what do I know?
