Compared to my Sociology "Professor" who made us do a whole freakin' project on, We didn't start the fire, by Billy Joel in a Tech and Society class . Don't even get me started on the state of higher education. Colossal waste of time and effort. Arrrrgggghhh!!! Still irked to this day and I was 19 then back in 1993. When 90+ percent of the class recognizes you're mailing it in, it's time to retire. F'n Billy Joel! Just go sing about your uptown girl.

@xrandy11

Tom it's ambiguous. Notice how the only pronoun used is to describe the son ('he"). To me the song is written from the perspective of a father (as you suggest) and the woman is named "Rachel", giving the title a slightly sardonic sheen. Others think that the narrator is a woman named Rachel.

boston globe 3/20/23 . Do people ever get confused? A. Absolutely. “Rachel’s Song,” it’s not a song for Rachel. Rachel is the narrator. But a lot of people don’t get that because I don’t spell it out like Prine or Steve Goodman.
