Killing him off was a bad idea. Excellent actor, great speaking voice, strong presence on screen and very attractive, too. His character was so interesting. Unlike most people probably, I was far less interested in what happened to Will. It made no sense to me that Elizabeth had Captain Jack and Norrington keen on her …wow…but she was devoted to Will. 🤔

James Norrington, the most complex character in this entire series. The one who goes through the most character development and probably the most honourable man in the entire series, surrounded by a bunch of thieving, lying, deceptive, selfish and ruthless people, not the very least the woman he is in love with, and through all of that he tries to do the right thing, tries to bring criminals to justice to serve the people he joined the navy for and world chewed him up and spit him out without care or concern. Elizabeth never deserved James and she still was the cause of his demise at the end. And yet he still died as Commodore Norrington would have wanted to go, defending the innocent against forces of evil. This series a comedy so it turns things upside down, glamorises criminals and villifies actually good men bound to their duties. But if you look closely at James Norrington in the second and third movie. Look past the comedy, the grit and the nobility of his Admiral post, you'll see exactly what this world did to James Norrington and it's a sad sad fate for a man who is so good. If there was any such things as an actual hero in the Pirates of the Caribbean Universe, not a protagonist, a hero then I don't think anyone embodies the word better than Commodore, later Admiral James Norrington. RIP.

As someone else said, if this was anything other than a family fantasy adventure popcorn franchise flick based on a theme park ride, Norrington would've been a worthy rival, if not the flat-out Austen style hero. An unflappable high ranking officer of station, duty and honour, reduced to a stammering and smitten mess around Elizabeth would've made him swoon-worthy, who might've dropped almost everything he stands for and put his resources and faith with a pirate to rescue his beloved.

It definitely does feel like something is missing when he said that, but I do have a theory. Given that through the deleted scenes of Becket we know he wasn’t above such things like Human trafficking, and given how in the intro of Worlds End we see citizens of dubious connections to piracy being hanged, even children, for someone as righteous as Norrington I’m sure he didn’t approve of either of these things, that a man like him could turn the other way while Becket is about to do these things. Just a thought, but if I were in his shoes and saw this stuff while being on the side of the “law”, even I’d feel guilty even if I didn’t swing the noose.

@@Cobra_125 While I agree with Norrington, Governor already had minimal screen time in 2nd movie so his minimal role in 3rd isn't such a let down like Norrington's which clearly lost relevance. With Feng though, he clearly serves as springboard for both Sparrow rescue and Elizabeth becoming more equal to rest of main cast. Add to it that Feng with his city, ship and minions enriched POTC franchise. Too be honest, I don't even recall Feng being that often present, basically only having 3 scenes. I like Norrington as a character well enough, but I can't forget that he wanted SO BADLY to marry a woman so much younger than him that he was an established officer in the Royal Navy when she was a very young child. That's just creepy. He was a lieutenant when we first met him, so he'd probably be in his early to mid 20s, while Elizabeth was maybe 8.
@easternlights3155
2 жыл бұрын
It might have appeared that way in the flashback (which was I think like 8 years before the events of the movie), since they didn't want him to be played by a different actor to avoid confusion. Canonically he was supposed to be around 18 years old in the flashback and in his twenties in present day. The fact that he is incredibly young for a commodore is a part of his characterization. 10 years age difference is no big deal even today, much less back then.

@@easternlights3155 that's a fair take, i guess. They could've made him look younger in the flashbacks, though, as is, it doesn't hold up well.
