My mom sang this to me as a kid. It is the first song I can remember. It was always hard for me to go to sleep or relax and this song brought me peace. It means the world to me. I apologize for how stupid and sentimental that sounds, but it has meaning beyond meaning to me.

My dad used to play the video of James and Carly Simon singing this song every night before bedtime when I was very little and I’d ask him to play this song (and James’s performance of jelly man kelly from Sesame Street) over and over again. Both of my parents are huge James Taylor fans, and they have both told me that when I was about 2 or 3 years old I would never be able to fall asleep without listening to this song. Now all these years later, I got to see James Taylor for the first time live in concert with my Dad last summer right before my 15th birthday. He closed the show by singing a duet of this song with Bonnie Raitt (another one of my favorite songwriters). Seeing him live was like a dream come true. His music has always been such a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember and it always will be.

This song was written for someone James was in love with at the time( some say it was Carly Simon.) When an artist is touring all over the country there's only small amounts of time when one gets to spend with those they love and this causes a great deal of sadness for almost all the artists out there that ever toured(are actors actresses that had to go somewhere to be on set for a long time I'm filming a movie.) 😔 from the outside looking in, people often say that "well if you don't like something you can just change it" but when you're under contracts worth millions that cannot be broken, there is no choice .. so one is forced to live in a constantly moving world around them that we have very little control over .. so the caravan keeps moving from town to town .. another day, some other way to try to stay happy and not miss home, friends & loved ones .. always another show .. strangers whom without them, artists would have no career, always want some time with you .. just a little quality time and at the end of the day, the end of the tour, there was/is never enough time to give to everyone we meet and still have our own peace of mind .. which is why so many artists / performers turn to booze and drugs to help them cope with ever changing surroundings, concert venues, people, places .. flight schedules & different hotel rooms every night .. so many people think that success in the music business is so glamorous and yet the "glamour" part is fleeing and in most cases turns out to be the time we're actually Onstage playing for the people .. all the rest of it is the same kind of grind as being in any kind of business .. IF you're going to succeed you have to work night and day never letting up lest you lose control of the wheel so to speak .. this song sounds like it is more about the artist missing out on all the most tender moments of a person's life that they can't be there for .. so in a way I guess you're right .. this can be interpreted as a goodbye song for someone dying (metaphorically speaking,) but I'm pretty sure that the One dying is the artist and their desire/need to be with the person they wrote that song for 💛

my all time favorite James Taylor song... I heard it randomly while I was in a situation that I knew would end and I always knew I would think of this song when that time came... broke my heart then and breaks it to this day... such a beautiful song that always makes me cry. like many, this song has a much deeper meaning for me than could ever be explained into words.

My mom passed away February 7th, 2021...I didn't get to hold her hand when she passed. I was there but I couldn't go back. She is at peace now but it is so hard. I did hold my dad's hand in 2009, just wish I could have with mom. I miss her so much! I miss them both ❤❤

I've been a James Taylor fan for years, but for whatever reason, I hadn't heard this particular song from roughly 10 years ago to this week. It was on a CD my family had when I was a young kid, but it was forever lost. I remembered many songs, but I forgot about this one and a few others. They are beautiful songs and I wish they had not disappeared from my memory until just now (but now that I hear them again I do recognize them and remember them).

Just wanted to post the beautiful lyrics to this song: Well the sun is surely sinking down, but the moon is slowly rising. So this old world must still be spinning round and I still love you. So close your eyes, you can close your eyes, it's all right. I don't know no love songs and I can't sing the blues anymore. But I can sing this song and you can sing this song when I'm gone. It won't be long before another day, we gonna have a good time. And no one's gonna take that time away. You can stay as long as you like. So close your eyes, you can close your eyes, it's all right. I don't know no love songs and I can't sing the blues anymore. But I can sing this song and you can sing this song when I'm gone.

Yep..........at the very end of "Carolina in my Mind", he sings over the repeated musical phrase, and part of it is, "Yes I'm gone, got to carry on without me...," at which point I either cry or beg him to stay or both.

I sang this song to my children every night. When my oldest daughter was in 7th grade, she sang it for a talent show and dedicated it to me. Tears of profound love, pride and gratitude streamed down my face the entire time. Now both my daughters sing it to their children, as do I. When my Grandaughter sings it, I'm filled with joy. It's become a family legacy to sing this to our children. 💗♾️🌌

JT is so special to me, because he has, after he was famous, done tiny little 100 persons concerts. I attended one after my firstborn. I was tied to him, nursing, but I got ready and went to the concert, being hormonal I cried throughout. I will never never forget it.
