UPDATE 3/12/2019: Our root cellar has performed magnificently. This is the second winter of use since completion, and we have not seen a temperature lower than 38F, with 39F being the average winter temperature inside the main room, here in zone 4. Humidity rarely gets below 90%, and if it does, it's easily adjusted by sprinkling water on the crushed-stone floor or opening the vent. The whole floor is drainage. We could not be happier! Thanks for watching.

@WnC Martin The root cellar is in upstate ny. We have never seen interior root cellar temp lower than 38F. We get winter temps well below zero. Like -25F sometimes. The top has repurposed 2” foam insulation, then repurposed rubber roofing laid on that. After that we buried it about 3 feet. Would have put more but ran out of dirt. It has been performing perfectly. No cracks in concrete or any of the blocks.

This is the first demonstration I've seen of how to do an arched roof on cinder block walls that makes sense. I presume the roof form was braced inside every which way it could be; looked like 12 inch centers on the still. Thanks very much for sharing your build!
@JC-jw1or
2 жыл бұрын
@ Bryson Alden 16 inch centers and yes there was bracing of 4 walls crossways and underneath. Also a 2x4 at the peak of the arch and between each to help keep them upright. It did really work well. The bottom edge of the rounded forms were also glued into the 2x4s

Hello North Texas! I owe my knowledge of how to build a root cellar to Mike And Nancy Bubel, and their book, “Root Cellaring - Natural Storage Of Fruits & Vegetables “. I highly recommend this book. They did a BUNCH of research, so I could decide on a design. I literally followed their recommendations. Thanks for watching. Jamie.

If I made suggestions: Locate the cellar where it will be shaded in the summer. It also makes the build more pleasant 😎

Yesterday, March 3, 2021, we gathered carrots, bedded in sawdust from out root cellar. They are in beautiful condition! Temp inside was 38F and humidity was 84%. I could adjust the humidity higher just by pouring water on the crushed stone floor. But, since there is only about 1 meal of carrots remaining, I will hold off. Hopefully this fall our garden will produce carrots and potatoes in abundance to restock. Thanks for watching 😊

Nice build. It may be time to make more videos, lol. Subbed and liked and belled. I would like it if you would give more details as you go. I am wanting to build one similar to yours. Also, no problem with ants coming up in the floors or down the air vents?

Can I ask what the sand in the brick cavities was for? Im interested in using this method for a retaining wall and as the three sides of a house so it can use the thermal mass of the earth.
@JC-jw1or
2 жыл бұрын
I only put the sand so there wouldn’t be a void. It was more of a money thing. The concrete half way up made me feel like the wall was anchored well, while the sand up to but not including the top row left place to lock the concrete roof. I’m no expert but for a retaining wall I would fill the entire wall with concrete. Thanks for the question. JC

A question. Is it not nessesary to waterproof the walls from the outside, so that rain wont run into the cellar?
@JC-jw1or
2 жыл бұрын
Good question. This space is for storing root crops, which prefer low temps and high humidity, and the entire floor is drainage. I did not seal the outside. However, a friend gave me some large sheets of rubber roofing that I laid on the concrete roof before covering with soil.

Hello DB. I’m in upstate NY. Sorry for taking so long to answer. We owe our knowledge of how to build this root cellar to Mike and Nancy Bubel, and their book, Root Cellaring.... They traveled all over looking at root cellars, asking what worked, pros and cons, then built their own with that information. They then put that information in book form.
