Charging is when a player: Jumps to check an opponent. Builds up speed by taking two or more strides immediately prior to making contact. Travels an excessive distance with the sole purpose of delivering such a hit. Violently and unnecessarily checks an opponent in any manner. Delivers a body check to an opponent’s blind side. A “charge” may be the result of a check into the boards, into the goal frame or in open ice. A Minor penalty will be assessed to any player who charges an opponent. Note 1: A blindside hit will be defined as an ‘open-ice body check that is delivered from an angle of approach outside a 90° peripheral point of view of a vulnerable opponent, whether or not the player has the puck. Should an open-ice body check be delivered from within a 90º angle of approach and the check is otherwise legal in all other aspects, then no penalty would be assessed. At the discretion of the Referee, based on the degree of violence of the impact, the Referee may assess a Major penalty and Game Misconduct penalty for charging. If a player is injured, as the result of a charging infraction that would otherwise call for a Minor penalty, a Major penalty and Game Misconduct penalty must be assessed. A Match penalty will be assessed to any player who charges an opponent in such a way that they are unable to defend themselves or who deliberately attempts to injure an opponent by charging.

Even if the head contact came first it still wouldn’t have been a penalty. The league has always viewed head contact as permissible if it is done in conjunction with an otherwise clean body check. With elbow tucked in and skates firmly planted on the ice, the only question for the referees is whether the hit constituted a full body check. And on that score there was quite a lot of contact with the shoulder and chest to qualify this as a full body check.

lol of course there's no consistency in the NHL. One game it's an illegal hit and in another it's legal. He hit him in the jaw, that's contact to the head. If they want to make it illegal then stop giving Benn and Truba a fuckin pass. I don't care either way but pick one and stick with it.

This morning I looked at it again with a clear head. I played it at 0.25X speed. I thought the behind the net view was the most compelling (for shoulder to shoulder) so I looked at it at 0.25X speed on top of the already slo' mo' of the replay. There are basically 2 frames as contact is made. 1) Toews's head and right shoulder in one position, and frame 2) Toews's shoulder in the exact same position while his head is lashing back. In other words, the first part of Toews that moves is his head. If you still believe this is "shoulder to shoulder", do what I did above and take the screenshots that prove it was shoulder to shoulder. Pretend you're going to send them to me to prove me wrong. You can't. This needs to he reviewed again.

could that be whiplash, or does that prove head contact?

@@drjamaymay405 Don't think so. Whiplash is more from everything beside the head moving before the head catches up to position with everything else. I don't think it could be whiplash. Good question tho 👍

@@PlumbSurprised If his head snapped from body contact, it would move forwards, in the opposite direction of the hit. It didn't move forward, did it? It moved backwards because it was the primary point of contact.
@PlumbSurprised

@@drewkoslow7754 I see what you're trying to say, but it's incorrect. The head will often snap back from the force of the body contact, that's what whiplash is. Go watch a compilation of hits and you'll see it happen often. Your argument would have more credibility (but not much) if you used the high position and angle of the hit instead.

NHL rule book 48.1 "Illegal Check to the Head - A hit resulting in contact with an opponent’s head where the head was the main point of contact and such contact to the head was avoidable is not permitted." Two points; first the head was the MAIN point of contact. The shoulder to shoulder doesnt matter since the head was the main point of contact. Second, totally avoidable by Benn. He CLEARLY hit high. Five strides and left his feet = 2 minutes for charging. Not a major penalty IMO. He kept that elbow down but I was pissed about not getting the charging call. I’m an Avs fan since ‘95 and I hate the Stars and really hate Jamie Benn. But that was no major penalty or suspendable hit. I’m glad Tazer is ok and like seeing hockey get more physical in the postseason.

It wasn't charging, Benn set that up perfectly. Watch him before he went around the net and you can see him recognize the opportunity. He kept his shoulder down and he executed it beautifully.
@n3xusseven
Ай бұрын
@@gregoryjames174 it wasn't executed beautifully unless you think putting another player at a high risk for a head injury is beautiful. It was shady, at best. I wouldn't call it super dirty either though, I know a little something about checking, and he definitely rode the line a bit tight due to the potential of hitting Toews in the head. If you mean he read the play beautifully, yeah sort of... he actually should have gone to the corner knowing Toews would bang it out of there. But he chose the easy vulnerable target... very reminiscent of Stevens around the turn of the century.
@gregoryjames174
Ай бұрын
@@n3xusseven Yes it was beautiful. He did not aim for the head in any way. He saw an opportunity, calculated where he was going to hit him and dropped his shoulder and that was it. You'd have no problem with it if it was an open ice hit. The hit was clean and the force of the hit made Benn's skate leave the ice, not his checking. It wasn't shady, Toews knows when you're battling around the boards with the puck you're likely to get checked. Benn did what we've all seen before in hockey, a nice big hit to invigorate the team , unlike last year where he DEFINITELY meant to injure. And wtf would the Avs let Benn freely skate in front of the net in the first place? Did you see two Avs players just split away from Benn to look to the other side of the net? Just let ol' Benny skate on through towards the puck. That was just dumb of them to leave him be like that. Lmao They even skated up to meet him and he just peeled away in the opposite direction. Now that's beautiful!
