No harm to talk if they can't fully agree they might be able to meet half way. The most important thing in northern Ireland is to get it up and running and preserving the peace wheather northern Ireland desides to stay in the UK or join a United Ireland is entirely up to them remember unionism and nationalism are 2 equally legitimate aspersions but the extremists must be taken out of the aquaision. I grew up in the ''troubles'' from a mixed background mum was protestant dad was Catholic and i had some cousins, uncles who were staunch Republicans on my dads side and had an uncle in the UDR and relatives in the Orange order on my mums side and we always have and always will remain very close as they are all family. I was raised Catholic and Nationalist with a very small n but was brought up to take people at face value and to respect all life. My own kids now have absolutely no interest in green/orange politics and have friends in both communities my eldest son plays football with a team mostly from a Protestant background and some of those guys are his closest friends. Would i like to see a united Ireland? Yes but only if both communities accepted it and my only reason for wanting to see it happen is because Northern Ireland has been kept the most deprived area in the Union with very little investment and for as long as their is a Tory government this will remain the case and no matter what nonsense some say about the South they have a far higher standard of living than we have in the North, i have seen that for myself having worked in the Republic their investment in communities is far higher than what we receive. We are only just out of the Catholic Gulag Republic that lasted far, far too long. Can we all just take a breather and concentrate on the unsexy bread and butter issues and leave the “Constitutional” questions to the grandchildren? They are sure to be better at it than us.
@jakenconor

No Niall. It was the "can do" and "must do" attitude of activism against constitutional wrongs and inequalities that brought things to the rarefied place where you could even envision leaving the constitutional things to our grandchildren to sort out. We can't stop now. We can't sit on our hands while there is still so much work to be done. Internment hasn't gone away, people are still locked up unfairly. Look into the case of the Craigavon 2. Two innocent men. Look at the state of the PSNI..despite the media and all sides of the government's ignoring of the situation, its still a deeply flawed police service, and burying our heads in the sand is not going to correct it. There is lots of very pressing work to be done.

A pity that Bryson did not answer the question of what exactly it is that Unionists fear. now that the catholic church no longer has any power in the south. You talk about your identity being compromised, but what does that exactly mean? You are British but you live on the island of Ireland, so what! Wave your flags , but you will never again be given complete control over how people in the north live; you have never been capable of incorporating Irish nationalists into your statelet, and it took a horrific , three decade-long armed struggle to bring this about. You will not like that last comment but without it you would have carried on as always. Your greatest weapon has always been instilling fear in people. Personally, I would love to see the democratic process flourish in the north ( as well as in the south, where there are huge problems to be addressed), but you can rest assured the current Dublin will continue to instill fear in people by constantly referring to the `cost´of reunification, in other words, they will do your dirty work for you, until such time as SF get elected and then you might see some change. Do you not see that any London government has no interest in you, other than for a possible electoral advantage ? I am not arguing as a traditional Irish republican, and I have no interest in religion, but joe brolly speaks a lot of since here, but Bryson has absolutely nothing of great interest to say. Is this the great white hope of Unionism? Then his final argument about the land border is absolutely ridiculous, until it is abruptly cut off. To end on a positive norte, we need more of this kind of thing, frank exchanges between Irish people on the future of our country. ( Btw; Mr Bryson, do your homework, as Joe himself pointed out, he is not a nationalist commentator, as you can see he is an intelligent open-minded individual capable of seeing both sides of an argument).
