FEETPRINT is a multi-layered storytelling project that engaged artists and residents of The Esplanade (Esplanadians of all ages and cultures) in a co-creative process to design over 150 shoes throughout the summer of 2017.
We asked each one of these Esplanadians three questions: Who am I? Where do I belong? How do I behave?
These 3 questions, initially asked by former Mayor David Crombie, ignited discussions around identity, history, diversity, labels, family, community… Life and death… Hopes and dreams.
We challenged participants to creatively express their intertwined identity on a canvas shoe. Through ongoing artist-led workshops, this process offered more than 150 people of all ages, cultural backgrounds and artistic abilities a platform to share their singular voices with their neighbours, friends, family. Each shoe created was added to a growing collection displayed in our park throughout the summer.
Together, these shoes formed a remarkable ensemble inviting the viewer to explore our community’s intangible cultural heritage and travel through the account of the many journeys that have shaped our communal identity.
A project supported by ONTARIO 150.
