If you're ever in the mood for a cheesy "guilty pleasure" type movie, check out Detroit Rock City. It's about 4 Kiss fans and their misadventures trying to get into a Kiss concert in Detroit in 1978. Edward Furlong from Terminator 2 was in it and there's a performance from the original Kiss. Unfortunately, Kiss has called it quits. They no longer play live shows. However, Ace Frehley is still playing shows with his band. I saw them a few months ago in Rhode Island. They played a lot of old KISS tracks, and his band is insanely talented and fun to watch.

4:58 Yes. Paul wrote God of Thunder with the intent of performing it on their album Destroyer. However, the producer Bob Ezrin listened to it and decided that it would work better with the tempo slowed and Gene on vocal. Paul’s original demo is available to listen to here on KZitem. It’s… *different*. Alot faster and pop-y. Ezrin made the right call.

I remember this, this concert was part of a Halloween Night 1998 special on Fox. It was hosted by Aries Spears and Nicole Sullivan from Mad TV. Smashing Pumpkins opened, dressed like The Beatles. I asked my father to tape it for me, because I was in Salem that night. Two weeks later I went to the show with a buddy of mine. He'd never seen Kiss before so I gave him a ticket. The two mics...I think one is for the normal vocal and the other is for the harmonized part. I could be wrong, though.

The anomaly of the song is that the star child, Paul Stanley actually wrote the song. It was a much tamer version and the producer said let's make it really heavy and give it to Gene. I was at this show! Flew in from Detroit. Halloween 1998. Lots of credit to Bob Ezrin of Pink Floyd and Alice Cooper fame for the arrangements on this song. My friend, that is Peter Criss. I've seen them quite a few times in the 70's , & they never disappointed. The 4 original members were the true Kiss that I loved. Whatever turmoil that might have been going on in the band at the time, they made sure their fan's had a good time. EVERY BAND has some sort of disagreements anger, or whatever it might be going on. Sometimes, that can make a band stronger by getting through the problem in a mature way. God of Thunder is one of my top kiss songs along with "Strange Ways" & "Black Diamond." If you ever get a chance to download or borrow the "Hotter Than Hell " album, take a listen to the song Strange Ways. Peter Criss does the vocals & Ace does one of his MOST PHENOMENAL lead guitar on this song . Trust me man You should review it

He’s older than the other members so he started to age a little quicker during the Reunion Tour/Psycho Tour. 2) The 2 mics are for when Gene does his “dual demon voice”. It’s hard to hear during this version though. 3) KISS played there LAST EVER show back in December. So it’s too late for you experience it in real life BUT!!! Yes, Paul wrote the original version of this song until it was rewritten and given to Gene. And this is the 4 original members. They hadn't planned on doing an album together but the Reunion tour was so monumentally successful and profitable that they did an album, Psycho Circus, and that tour is what this video is from. This was the 1st show of that tour. When the reunion happened, Ace and Peter screwed themselves and made the mistake of signing over the rights to their makeup design. That's why, Eric Singer ended up wearing the Catman makeup and Tommy Thayer wore the Space Ace makeup after they split again. On this tour, KISS had planned to use a circus troupe doing all their acts as the opener for the concert since this was the Psycho Circus tour. But that circus troupe was too expensive to keep it going so this show was the only one it was used for. As for going to a KISS show, they played their last show not long ago in NYC. Plus, Paul doesn’t sound good anymore and they were playing to some tracks as well which, as much as I love my boys, is total crap. Paul's voice has been going downhill for a number of years now actually. Still a great show but not what it was. Considering hos age, that's to be expected and not an insult.

Also, remember if it's one bass drum it's Peter. Eric Carr and Eric Singer played double bass drums.

Seen them live many times starting with the Creatures tour. I was going to say something about his ghost notes, but you beat me to it. I've heard Peter say that he was influenced by Jazz drummers as well as rock. I think it was Gene Krupa.

Gotcha! Thats a great drummer to be inspired by! That particular groove is not as easy as people think until you sit down and try and play it. Thanks for the insight!

@setonhillstudios I wouldn't know about drumming since I play guitar, but my buddy is a really good drummer. I hear him talk about some things. I don't play guitar much anymore because of a shoulder injury. It hurts to play now. But I've got to play sometimes even though it hurts.

Second mic is a backup. He’s way up in the air and if one goes out he still has vocals.

As I mentioned in another comment here, I was a Kiss fan from the beginning. A friend of my sister had their debut album (Remember albums? Man, I'm old. Lol) My sister and her friend were a few years older than me and always listening to music. I got into a lot of music that probably most kids my age didn't till later as a result. Kiss, Nazareth, Ted Nugent, Rush, Aerosmith, Thin Lizzy, etc. Hard rock. Not pop. Lol The next year they released their breakthrough album, Alive. That year I turned 12. Alive was the first album I bought with my own money. (Do kids still get allowance money these days? Lol) At the time they were losing money on record sales. Hugely successful tours. But little in record sales. Their label at the time, Casablanca, was going under financially. Kiss had been their first act signed. Alive was a last effort to keep both the label and the band afloat. Four releases in 2 years. The problem with Kiss was their first 3 studio albums had not been able to capture the energy of their live performances. Kiss were a band to be seen and heard. So the idea of recording a double live album was born. And yes, years later it came out that there was some studio magic done to enhance what was already a good performance. So what? I personally don't know of any record in any genre without some level of studio enhancements. And I couldn't care less. For reasons I won't get into here; I've gone too long already, I didn't get to see them live until I was in my late 30s. 2000 in Charlotte, NC. Opening acts were Ted Nugent and Skid Row, I believe. Gene, Paul & Ace plus Eric Singer. All in make up. Peter was gone by then, having once again bitten the hand that fed and Ace would follow in Peter's footsteps not too long after. Maybe 2 years. Fortunately, Ace was able to salvage a solo career and last I heard is still going strong. I believe he's released new music in the last year or two. Fun fact: Paul Stanley wrote Detriot Rock City after playing a show in Charlotte NC, near where I grew up. He learned after the show that a fan who was on his way to that very concert was killed in a car crash. Paul wrote the song as a tribute of sorts to the lost fan. As for why he chose to name drop Detroit instead of Charlotte for the song, Detroit was the birthplace of a lot of good music. Music that had influenced and a multitude of artists. At the time, Charlotte was not nearly as big or well known, for better or worse, as it is today.

Thanks for the detailed comment as I always love learning about people and how they began to love certain music! I personally feel like today’s music scene is not anywhere near the heroes of the past because everyone is looking for their “viral moment” and releasing singles instead of letting albums tell the story and play the long game! I love so many of the bands from the past because I cut my teeth on their music while learning the drums! Thanks for walking down memory lane and have a great night!

Apparently the other one is for a vocal effect he uses during one part. At least that is what others are saying! 👍🏻
