My first hifi setup as a young teenager was a Marantz PM7001 with Jamo bass reflex speakers, was epic, I loved it so much, could make the house collapse under the sound pressure

Hi thanks for the review I found very interesting. I probably buy kit at about the same rate as you do. For me soon as I saw the first amps I thought that you may have problems, because I believe the 11s are 4ohms and you need more current as you proved with the ruby ,I didn't know it was class d though, in my experience that is why it calmed the brightness on the treble and gave a nicer tone than people had reported as most back then would have used class a or ab, so it seems you have hit the sweet spot with the amp-speaker pairing which is great information thanks - you may know this but not tried it - a few deep pile rugs and some books scattered around maybe the odd scarf hung up and you will be shocked at how the speakers disappear, it took well over a decade before I acted on this common (to us) knowledge and it was a substantial and most cost effective upgrade I ever did. Thanks again will watch out for your next video .Paul - Notts

Hmm, tempted to buy a pair that have just come up for sale. Will be powered by an sx-1280 so will report back if the purchase is made.

Is that a silk dome tweeter? I'm trying to upgrade from my classic Polk Audio LSI15. Do you this this is an upgrade or not? Thanks for your time and effort

Yes - it’s a seas silk dome tweeter. As for the second part of your question, I haven’t heard the Polk LSI15 so I can’t comment as to whether the Jamo is an upgrade or not. However, from my experience I can say that the Jamo Concert 11/D870 is a superb speaker in its own right that suits many genres well, and remains faithful to the source.

I just bought a pair of these second hand for 500$. The guy was not the original owner and must not have known what he had. Unfortunately it looks like the midrange driver cones must’ve shattered a long ago because they were replaced with a now-discontinued set of Vifa midrange woofers that I cannot for the life of me scrounge up a data sheet for. Clearly they were chosen simply because they were drop in replacements for the mounting ring. However, I am looking into making an adapter ring to mount up a pair of SEAS Excel W18NX-001 (or E0042), which are coated-paper cone versions of the original, and have very similar specs on the data sheet. I’d get the W18EX-001 (E0017) which are the new version of the same woofer that it came with(but also needing an adapter ring), but they are over 100$ more expensive per woofer and evidently they like to fail prematurely. I think I’d rather have the “downgraded” version that should last another 20 years of daily use.

Thanks for the info, what did you do finally ?

@@Nico-li1bg I designed that adapter ring and had it 3D printed it with polycarbonate 100% fill to make a solid flange. I sunk threaded inserts to be able to use machine screws to mount drivers, and I bought the W18NX excel woofers. I just dropped them in and they sound great after setting the tweeter to the attenuated position in the crossover. Much better midrange detail and clarity than the Vifa woofers. I then found out later that the original drivers were 4ohm versions made specifically for Jamo which I overlooked because the Vifa woofers were 8ohm, so I’m 90% sure that the acoustical slopes on the crossover are completely borked now, and I’m sure that I’ve introduced diffraction elements from having the woofer sticking up from the baffle. Currently thinking about starting over with the well regarded HiVi L6 drivers that fit flush into the cabinet and come in 4 ohm and 8 ohm variants, so I could try them with the original crossover before I commit to designing a new crossover. Another part of me says to just stop worrying about making the speaker perfect and enjoy the music. Which is largely why I haven’t bothered to buy the measurement equipment and start “fixing” the speakers.

Thank you for the thorough answer, very much appreciated. I’m about to buy one pair of those columns, but I’m so afraid to be left with boxes with speakers that end up failing. The used speakers I’m interested in buying have been used only 1 year, and very well stored afterwards. So, maybe I’ll take the chance.. but those horror stories on Internet can be really worrisome for the future, with no easy alternative for repair/replace..

@@Nico-li1bg Well, the HiVi L6 speakers should make great drop in replacements for the Excel woofer in 4ohm, or the 8ohm model for the BSC woofer. And the excels sound legitimately great even without a properly designed crossover.

Ok I see. At first I found it weird to consider a 60$ replacement in place of a super high end speaker like Seas Excels, but hey they have excellent reviews so why not

How would the D870 position against the E870 series in Jamo's line up? I have a 5.1 set (second hand) and can't really find much information about them at all.

The D870 is a significant upgrade from the E series. I briefly owned a pair of E875 and these blow them out of the water. That being said, the E series are fun speakers and for surround sound applications they are more than capable.
