Charlie Haden, for me, had the most emotive bass sound in jazz. His style of playing touches the heart and the head. When you can do that music becomes a full living language.

I saw this amazing trio perform only once in the mid to late 70’s in the UK in Nottingham. I will never forget it. Warmest thanks.

I saw them around that time at the Northern College of Music, Manchester. My friend had just got the Folk Songs album. Do you remember Jan just improvising on the mouthpiece of his soprano? He took it off the horn and started playing it. Mesmerising

gasté las cintas de cassette de tanto escuchar a estos tres seres de otro planeta. Tanto que ya escucho sin poner cintas ni cds. Esas melodias las tengo grabadas en la memoria y cuando estoy solo, puedo escuchar los temas enteros en silencio. Un regalo de los dioses

Los trés aparecieron en '79 y '80 en Berlin como música de otro mundo. Publicaron "Folk Songs" y "Mágico", dos albumes maravillosos con ECM.

Su disco MAGICO me trae recuerdos de mi adolescencia...cuando lo escuché por primera vez allá por finales de los setenta del siglo pasado me condiciono mi destino musical....cuando hoy dia escucho este disco o otros de ellos, pero este en particular, me sigue sorprendiendo el enorme nivel de calidad musical.

Yes, exactly _ cannot respond in spanish, but I understand exactly - We did not have tv, but I happened to watch this exact clip on some neighbor's TV, and it was then that I understood I wanted to be a jazz musician - Many people have misunderstood me since, thinking I wanted to play bebop and other fast moving stuff - but THIS is what I meant - I want to be inside THIS music ! It is LIFE !

I believe this is a different version of the original performance from the official album in 1980 ECM Records GmbH (ECM 1151) still very, very good one! 'Garbarek' comes from the Latin word for Nordic people who don't speak Latin, which to the Romans sounded like "garbarek"

Is it possible that I heard this trio at Kalvøya-festivalen in 1972? One of the deepest musical experiences I have ever had.

I don't know. But their first recording was in 1980. And it would be odd for a trio playing in 1972 to wait 8 years before recording.

Kalvøya 1972 is certainly too early. Gismonti recorded in Oslo November 1976 with Vasconcelos. I guess that was the first time in Europe.

I'm quite sure that Duke Ellington would love this music! Did you ever hear his "Far East Suite?" The word "swing" doesn't always necessarily mean swing rhythm.
