I was privileged to be able to watch Tony Williams play several times: - In a basement jazz dive, I watched Tony play in the rhythm section of the band that toured with Miles shortly after ‘Bitches Brew’ - I watched Tony play his famous yellow drum set with clear top heads and dotted black bottom heads in concert with Jan Hammer et al - After Miles passed away, I watched Tony play a tribute concert with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, and Wallace Roney - After Tony passed away from a heart attack, I watched his bandmates play again together one more time: Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, and Wallace Roney Tony was an incredible drummer and percussionist. What Tony could do 40 years ago would put most modern drummers to shame.

@sandytrunks

@@markrobinson6129 Yes, of course, that's the only possible answer to "where M.O. got their energy". But I do perceive that specific riff Jan played there could have easily been lifted out of any number of bootleg Mahavishnu Orchestra LIVE concert recordings I've listened to. That was a good catch and I think that's probably what P. Schouten meant.
Great synth patches, highly expressive! approved by on of the greatest synth innovators of all time, Jan Hammer. The keytar was designed and dedicated to Jan Hammer personnaly by Robert Moog And Tom Oberheim. Your opinion are purely subjective, his experience and qualification is not!
@snuppssynthchannel
6 жыл бұрын
Korg M1 is outdated but it was still revolutionary, and decent patches can be made on the synth.
@Drivethebeat
6 жыл бұрын
Agreed. You're the only one who feels the same way. The M1 is a piece of shit! Even though the iconic Joe Zawinul used it. Don't really care about Jan Hammer's take on it. He's not a synthesist, but more of a soloist / player. To my knowledge, Duke, Chick, Herbie, didn't use it. That's enough for me. As well as my own experience with one at Sam Ash back in the day.
@snuppssynthchannel

Drivethebeat Jan hammer was a synthesist and one of the greatest ones. His moog patches and work with the fairlight and korg wavestation were revolutionary. He have made patches for korg as well.

I've got to be honest, Tony has limited vocabulary. I don't know why everyone is making such a big deal over this. I don't see it and I have been playing for 45 years. I think a lot of drummers get fooled by how he tunes/muffles his drums. They don't consider that.

VintageMXer: Ok... So his work with: Jackie McLean, Grachan Moncur III, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter represents a limited vocabulary? No way sir... you sound like one of those folks that couldn't make it so you resort to criticism. Tony did so many things for drums and music that people are still absorbing the brilliance. I know I am!
