I love the methaphore about his own sexuality trapped on a cage like Bertha. That sexy element on this version makes the story even more fascinating. And of course, Toby plays the most amazing Rochester. HE is the ultimate Rochester

I think that one of the reasons Jane Eyre survived as a heroine is her being an incredible strong character. Had she been just another woman-victim of his, then she would not be noteworthy. It is the strength of her love for him as opposed to her strong moral sense that make her different.

Anyone else notice that the bed-on-fire scene is a metaphor for sexual desire. The dubbed cries are totally sexual. These two actors are my very favorite representation of this wonderful book

I believe your first Jane Austen favorite is "Pride and Prejudice" right? It is my favorite Austen one and then "Northanger Abbey" and "Persuation". But above all I am a devoted Charlotte Bronte fan.

I know it's weird but I have to comment on my video. I am irritated slightly on two instances: 1) where Susanna White says "Our Jane is a very sexual being" which every time want to answer "Yeah, as if the character of the book wasn't?" and 2) where Toby Stephens adds "I like the way Sandy has made them two very sexual people" and I always react like: "It was Charlotte Bronte that made them that way, one and a half century back, not Sandy".

Toby: "I really like the way that Sandy's made them these two very sexual people." You two, huh? LOL! And all said with a little grin. Love Toby. :)

To continue, I understand what they wanted to emphasize with these comments, namely that they where going for a sexed up version of the book, which I wouldn't mind as the book is itself really passionate but they overdid it with the separation scene, which was the opposite of the book where desire is projected through denial of the loving object and not through sexy scenes. The moral dilemma is undermined, he appears as a liar (brother and sister!) and she much weaker than the book.

I am not exactly sure that his sexuality is trapped :). It seems quite elusive some times like that cigar smoke of his that Jane can feel surrounding her invisibly. And then his sexuality had quite a space to exercise itself with so many mistresses...Lol!

@MsSilentia He lied about Bertha but he was not a habitual liar. What would be the use to tell Jane they would live as brother and sister? It is ridiculous even to suggest it, let alone think that Jane is fool enough to believe it.I wouldn't entirely object to this scene if it was presented as the passionate dreams that Jane has about Mr Rochester but I am annoyed that they sacrificed the dailogue of seperation (the center of the book) for this (just an erotic scene).Where are their arguments?
