My favorite version. There is something off-kilter about Hurt's Rochester that feels more real and sincere than any other version. And Charlotte gives a convincing performance of a woman with hidden scars and pain covered by determination, personal strength. yet with the ability to love and deep passion. Hard to get better than this one.

Those of us here on Earth who remain may we repent of our sins and know Jesus Christ as our savior and follow him. Jesus commanded us to love one another this means we need to feed the hungry clothe the naked visit the sick take care of the orphan and the widow take in the homeless. Jesus told us to keep God's commandments that are found in Deuteronomy the fifth chapter and the sixth chapter. Jesus commanded us to present our bodies a living sacrifice holy and acceptable unto God which is our reasonable service. And Jesus commanded those who are married to remain married. And Jesus said those who are divorced and remarried are actually living in adultery. I like so much that this Rochester in this adaptation is very respectful towards Jane. In this scene he slightly provokes and encourages Jane to reveal her feelings for him. And afterwards kisses her on her face so gently and carefully as if she really were some unearthly creature. Very well written scene and characters. In other versions (and I saw all of them)) Rochesters tend to be a little bit too soppy and somehow seductive - rush into too anatomical and too explicit passionate kissing and all tenderness is lost (to my taste))

Charlotte Gainesbourg should have received an Oscar nomination for her lovely, incandescent performance as Jane Eyre. She brings a quiet strength and dignity to the character that is quite compelling. While she embodies the role with sweetness and sincerity, she also has a strong willed and outspoken side that isn’t afraid to stand up for herself. She also has an ethereal, pixie-like quality to her face and voice that Mr Rochester describes in the book. I love this scene because when she tries to hold back her tears as Mr. Rochester pulls on her heartstrings, it feels so real.

I've always thought out of all the actresses in the other adaptations, (I'm not disputing their talents, I love the other versions too!) but I always thought Charlotte looks the most right. Especially after the fire scene in this movie, when Rochester is holding her hand and they are facing into each others eyes, her profile is simply stunning. With her hair down and out of her governess clothes, she does look like the young girl her character is meant to be, you can see the vulnerability and depth in face.

Btw I haven’t read the novel completely; but if this dialogue is direct from the novel you can hear words that no woman had said to her love in English literature at this time (please correct me if I’m wrong) . “ How can you be so stupid “ meaning how cannot you see how much I love you? “ and “ I’m no caged bird… “ etc and my favorite “ How can you be so cruel…” I know why Mr. Rochester behaves like that. I have done the same thing myself. His cruelty is nothing but frustrated passion and his way to erode away the layers after layers of walls that Jane protects herself with. He tried to awake the beast of fire hidden whit-in Jane. And he finally did it. For a woman of her position and status in Victorian England would have been unacceptable and improper. Gosh , Jane one of my favorite literary characters of all time.

Simplemente irrepetible.

It's definitely like that in the book too. He wants to get a reaction out of her - we are in her head so we know how she feels, but she doesn't express it to others often. He wants to know if she loves him back. Of course, there are less insane ways of going about finding out, including asking her like a normal person, haha! But this was the Victorian era, so all the restrictions of gender and class make it impossible to be truthful. He's playing with her to see if he can needle her into exploding (as she does) and revealing her true feelings. Then he can propose safely in the knowledge that she definitely feels something back. He goes about it by sparking jealousy because he's naturally a Cheshire cat prick, and that's why he's a fun character!
