The greatest of all Liederkreis ever recorded - the composer, poet and singer are united in a bond that transcends the temporal. The vocal details of shading, weight, phrasing and tonal beauty are a reflection of the soul in communion with nature. The inwardness and ineffable poignance of Dame Janet’s reading is on another level from the extensive competition. One of the very greatest of her vast legacy of seminal recordings.
A detail I'm noticing only now, after having listened for several minutes, is that Mrs. Baker has had an astounding capability of pronouncing German correctly although she was English.

With Schumann we are therefore confronted, with Janet Baker and Daniel Barenboim, in the formation of a single entity. Exceptional performers, who redefine this cycle with a dialectic between the imaginary and a magnificent relationship to time. They tell us with colors and accents of great richness touch after touch the story of each lied without forgetting that it is a cycle in whole. I listened to her Mondnacht in particular and found her pitches slightly sharper(a few cents higher) than the piano accompanyment; "die Er-de" for example; the "Er"sound is noticeably sharper.

Singers often reach a brightness that pianos (in equal temperament) cannot.
