She is the only woman in the music industry that didn't undercut her music or her voice for anyone. She gave women a certain freedom in the 60's and she told everyone to suck it up. And never gave up. Yet there is so little appreciation. There are no statues, no books on her carving an industry for women. She didn't lean on anyone, she didn't play barbie, or house, she didn't pretend for the media. And because of that as most women in history she died young for doing what she did. An amazing talent, and a goddamn WOMAN. Never had another since.

Although she died six years before I was born, she is one of my favorite singers of all time. She is/was a TRUE artist. Back before KZitem, videos and computer searches at your fingertips, artists HAD to have talent. Now in our time and culture, talent is unfortunately based on your physical appearance. Just look pretty and we can auto tune your voice and you can lipstick. But if you’re not an attractive person, good luck getting a record deal. One of the first ladies of rock and roll. RIP Janis.

I was lucky enough to live during the heyday of Janis, Hendrix, and Morrison. Those three epitomized the spirit of the sixties and Janis was the Queen of the Rock World. He boldness and straightforward way was uncommon for women during that time, but sadly she was misunderstood and her tortured soul was too much for her to overcome. During her trip to her hometown of Port Arthur, TX, she wasn't received with open arms and film clips taken during her stay actually caught the hurt she experienced while there. But her music lives on and these wonderful videos of her on the Dick Cavett Show are the best. I remember seeing this for the first time in 1969.
