Even though Janis didn't get as long a run as some with her music, she left behind one hell of a legacy. Her beautiful and unique voice combined with her on stage charisma made her truly stand out from the rest. I wish she could have realized how talented she was. One hell of a lady. This was one of the first 5 major concerts I witnessed. I love serious Blues and Freddie McDowell had opened saying his line "I do not play no Rock 'n Roll" so Big Brother opened saying "We DO play Rock 'n Roll!" and Man! did they! Newport actually had decent sound reinforcement rare in '68 and it was the first time I'd heard guitar sound tearing up the very ground as well as the air. It was life changing.

Terrific audio. As good as being live. I saw her in San Francisco. Savoy Brown opened. Janis is so beyond terrific....a real gem. Beautiful audio on this really shows how easy it is to be pulled into Janis' voice and story. So rare and beautiful. A great gift for all of us. I wish she were here. Love to hear what she would say. PS Music producers often overload over great singers. A real shame. You should always be able to hear the lead singer......and Janis is an especially important case. You can hear and feel her in this audio. A great gift to us was Janis Joplin. Vaya con Dios Pearl.

The song COO COO come from the Cuckoo, an old bluegrass song. Taj Mahal did it and many others have done this song. The guitar playing is really great on this song and the same goes for Summertime which is played using 2 guitars and in counterpoint. It is definitely brilliant and the group was up to her voice. They were underrated at the time and she eventually left the band to go on her own...

Yeah and paid the ultimate price with everyone’s fickleness. The way I see it though…. Artists need to evolve. Bob Marley said same thing when he added electric guitar to his reggae sound. Apparently a lot of purists didn’t like that. Janis was hungry to learn her craft. And BB wasn’t giving it to her. But then cos the press was real hard on them. Once Janis left, they then started giving her crap. It’s really weird when I read about it. Cos it’s still happening with certain artists today oddly. What’s the point if they can’t evolve and expand their sound?

Fantastic recording and excellent photo montage. Really well done. I've always wondered if this recording is from the daytime show (Janis in white dress) or evening (Janis in the famous black mini-dress and fishnet stockings). God, why didn't the festival or someone film these? What i wouldn't give to see this performance - Landy's photos just whet the appetite. That black dress, which is incredibly beautiful and colorful (the embroidery was designed by Linda Gravenites, and it has been on display at the RR Hall of Fame) is the greatest Joplin look before the feather boa "Pearl" era. And when you see it in person, it's striking how tiny it is and how tiny Janis was. We have this notion that she was a stocky woman, but not at all. Tiny really.

Wow! This is the best job of mixing I've ever heard in a Janis recording. She's right up there like at her concerts instead of buried under the instrumentals as in just about every recording I've owned or heard. Am I just buying shitty recordings or did they always have to mask her for some reason of their own?
@Renshen1957
8 жыл бұрын
The person at the soundboard put her forward in the mix as the band was at this time was known as Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company. The best recording of them live is at The Carousel Ballroom which was mikee and mixed by the Grateful Dead's soundman Owsley Stanley aka Bear. That captured the band as heard in a concert at a ballroom. The remix of Ball Chain (live unlike most of the album) from Cheap Thrills, has Janis singing at lower volumes toward the end (and the band followed her) in parts (more dramatic), different from the LP which was boosted to a louder more uniform volume for the record. Blame the sound engineers who mastered the record pressed at the plant if she's buried.
