Our God Does Big Things:
Our God is an awesome God! He can do little things, and He can do big things. In
Genesis 1, we read of God doing a big thing when He created the world. In
Genesis 6, he did another big thing when he destroyed the world with a
universal flood. But he also demonstrated his great compassion by saving Noah
and his family. Probably the biggest thing God ever did was to send Jesus to this
world to die for the forgiveness of our sins.
Losing Our Sense of Awe Leads To Complacency:
If we aren’t careful, we Christians can drift into a lifeless spiritual rut. Where we
just go through the motions of faithfulness, but somewhere along the way we
lost our awe and wonder of God. We sometimes forget that with God all things
are possible. (Luke 18: 27; Revelation 2:4; 3: 15-16).
The Solution For Complacency: Restore Our Awe and
Focus on God:
Paul said that God could do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or
think (Ephesians 3:20). Sometimes the walls of our spiritual ruts are so high we
can’t pray beyond them! (i.e., “The congregation will never grow,” “I will never
grow as a Christian,” “No one is interested in hearing about the gospel,” “God
doesn’t care about my problems.”) (1 Peter 5: 7; Hebrews 12: 1-2)
Are Your Prayers Big Enough?
As we begin this New Year, ask yourself these three questions: 1) What do I
want to accomplish for God with my life? 2) How far do I want the kingdom of
God to expand? 3) What do you want this congregation to be? Often, our prayer
focus is on ourselves instead of God. (James 4: 3; 1 Timothy 6: 8-9). God blesses
us so we can serve Him, not so we can live the “good life.” (Matthew 6: 33; Luke
14: 26)
Jesus Taught His Disciples To Think Big!
In the Great Commission, Jesus directed the apostles to go into the world and
make disciples. This command was probably beyond the apostle’s
comprehension. To achieve these lofty goals, Jesus taught his apostles to pray
persistently. (Luke 18: 1-8; 11: 5-8)
