I've found the dimmable windows on 787 hard to control - maybe that's why. Then again, I was recently on a long daytime A330 flight where I was at a window near the engine. The sunlight reflecting from the white engine nacelle was so blindly bright, I had to keep my window shade closed most of the time. I sure could have used a dimmable window - I could have actually been able to see outside.

Tried the A350 dimmable windows on Starlux Airlines in December 2023. Honestly its great, dimming much faster and much darker than the ones on the 787. Personally I love it over traditional window shades since it gives you the option to see out of the window whilst not be blinded by the sun but I suppose it's up to personal preference. It also gives the crew the ability to remotely dim all windows to a certain darkness(there wont be that one singular person who refuses to close a bright window anymore). Here I thought the whole point of the dimmable windows was to use tech to save weight compared to the cover slides and their frames. Generally speaking, less moving parts is less maintenance over the long haul, and weight (even of plastic) has a cumulative affect on fuel burn over the life of the aircraft and to a lesser extent on range per flight, granted the latter is seldom tested given the wide safety margins already built in. This is probably just a cost saving measure to get the aircraft flying sooner, but I can only imagine in the long term they could be refit with a cabin upgrade in 5-10 years as most airlines get. I can only imagine it might be relatively hard to resell a mixed-configuration plane 20-25 years down the road in its service life.
