This song is definitely one of Sylvian’s magnum opuses…at least in Japan, but my god was Mick Karn so incredibly gifted, the saxophone adds so much ambiance to this haunting song, which is why I prefer it to the studio version 100%. Also the vocals are incredible here

Well it was pretty big in the UK as well, reaching number 5 in the singles charts in April 1982.

A song called ghosts that’s haunting, innovation at its maximum. Japan were awesome.

Lyrics >>> When the room is quiet The daylight almost gone It seems there's something I should know Well, I ought to leave But the rain it never stops And I've no particular place to go Just when I think I'm winning When I've broken every door The ghosts of my life Blow wilder than before Just when I thought I could not be stopped When my chance came to be king The ghosts of my life Blew wilder than the wind Well, I'm feeling nervous Now I find myself alone The simple life's no longer there Once I was so sure Now the doubt inside my mind Comes and goes, but leads nowhere Just when I think I'm winning When I've broken every door The ghosts of my life Blow wilder than before Just when I thought I could not be stopped When my chance came to be king The ghosts of my life Blew wilder than the wind
The old grey whistle test set ot this, with riyuchi sakamoto on it, is excellent, what a band what a voice what a song

That saxophone that Mick Karn is playing in between the silent parts is wonderfully haunting and David Sylvian's vocals are truly sonorous here; such a magnificent live performer he is

Tin Drum is an amazing album, although some of the tracks are perhaps better on the live album Oil On Canvas such as Visions of China.

@@theWARMJET Japan, especially Sylvian definitely was majorly influenced by Roxy Music but Tin Drum stands uniquely on its own. Also nice Eno reference in the username

we were allowed to have a radio in the 6th form common-room. When this came on, boys used to put the blinds down. a genuinely spooky (and tragic, though we didn’t realise that at the time) pop song.

When they brought this stuff out all those years ago they did so with the knowledge that it was meant to be listened to in 2018 and beyond, it’s as futuristic as any music ever can be.
