For all those wondering about piloting, the Japanese vehicle is mostly autonomous - from the Japanese Times: "The initial model will fly basically on auto pilot, but it’s not 100 percent autonomous because a pilot would need to manoeuvre it in case of an emergency, for example." Forgot to mention that.

Yep, that is my main concern, as security and capability of a pilot may be major obstacles for the diffusion of this tecnology (nobody wants a mad idiot crashing his giga-drone in your roof) (There is a reason pilots currently undergo years of training, and that is not only to learn how to pilot the aircraft, but also how to behave in the event of accident, in the event of catastrophic failures, interfacing with airline control towers, etc)

So there wouldn't be much demand. Also if I dont have to own it, someone else will. And they will want insurance on it, especially since they arent even in the vehicle! Its all strangers and AI. And if something goes wrong with the aircraft, its probably certain death. And the passenger couldnt do anything. So who would really want to fly in it? That makes it even less enticing as an option. I’m surprised you put such weight on the charging standard. This will definitely mirror the cell phone charger history in how OEMs will try to develop and license a standard they control until product ubiquity occurs and the monetization of a plug standard impedes future product sales. The biggest focus should be on energy sources... like perhaps what value Hydrogen may have compared to batteries due to their diminishing weight through the consumption cycle of the flight whereas battery weight stays the same through the whole ride for example. I’m not a hydrogen over battery proponent however recent points made by other youtubers (and Bill Gates) are interesting.

When I think of a flying car, it’s something straight out of Blade Runner movies. Silently hovering and moving around. What we get, big ass blades and tons of noise with no wheels.
@midgetman4206
3 жыл бұрын
Well that is also the movie that has that weird physics breaking photograph simulator thing. There are ways of reducing noise, such as multiple options that reduce induced drag at the wingtips, different types of propulsion systems, different types of engines and their noise suppression systems (or lack of with electric as they just use electric motors), and altitude since these things usually won't be cruising at low (relatively) heights. Though I do agree that most designs don't look like a car and so look ugly as one, like most gyrocopters that have many exposed aircraft pieces which don't look great on a car and pretty much make them look like blenders who's glass shattered from all the jagged edges on them. That is the price to pay for efficiency, you lose the elegance of what is essentially a smooth rectangle that can fly So you're stuck with this until we find some kind of internal lifting mechanism like anti-grav or something

One of the major factors to consider is not how is it going to fly, but who. There will either have to be massive limitations on how high the operator can go without a valid pilots licence. I see there is massive potential in the light sport sector for this, flight training will benefit massively from this but there is a increased concern for safety as it becomes more widely available due to the level of competence of the operator of the aircraft.

Dagogo, I would just like to add that although the wright bros did successfully take off and land( however short a flight) a heavier than air craft, they were not the first to achieve actual air. As I'm sure you are aware, New Zealander Richard pierce , who built an engine and body of an aeroplane in his garage or shed after finishing his days work on his farm. Around the same time( week before, or week after) as the wrights made their flight, Pierce managed to take off in a field, but was unable to control the craft during the flight and had to "crash land in a hedgerow.When told about the wright bros, he said that the " first" heavier than air flight was still first from them, because he was as yet unable to land as well as take off! Humility from a Kiwi bloke who hadn't even heard of the wrights or anyone else, and was working on his handbuilt engins(adapted from milk cans) in his spare time in his shed, with no particular timetable or extra research.Despite his obscurity and humility he deserves(in my book) a central position in the development of manned flight.

While I firmly believe everyone should take some flight training even now - I do NOT believe everyone should be a pilot! 3 - Insurance and liability - people do stupid and dangerous things with automobiles - just imagine the potential for mayhem with 100's or thousands of air vehicles over a urban of even a suburban area each day!!

Fly to your destination and then swap out the battery pack, A properly designed system could mean the aircraft would be ready to resume flight in minutes. the different charge rates thing. value is subjective, if it doesn't work for you, not buying it will put more strain on the business, forcing them to lower their prices at some point. value may differ for every single individual, so having different charge rates per area is pretty understandable, but the only way for a company to know what the proper price range should be is through profits and losses, which you as the consumer have complete control over.

It sounds like a bad idea putting up flying air taxis in the sky,but maybe the industry can make it work. My professors name is BRIAN GERMAN! You should look him up especially at the AIAA website. He has done alot of NASA research on it.

We could get a breakthrough if we could have no contact charging..say instead of roads we have fly zones along which the battery gets keeping charged as long as it remains in those zones with an emergency backup if It goes off grid..also the traffic can be controlled with polarity working in only certain direction..they could be charged on the energy used..someday maybe

there will still be some safety policies like "only fly within this lane", "stay within this altitude", and "no overtaking", but we know humans don't follow rules. still, it's exciting to imagine.

What could be a safe way to land non vtol aircraft vertically or in a narrow space at least? I could imagine sling shot based airtaxi stations in some height for the take off.

Simply impractical for so many reasons. Such a thing is only needed because there are simply too many people.

It could work on a commercial basis but I don't see it as a personal device anytime soon,, plus the cost of insurance and accidents are too great at this point.
